Chapter 1 - The Bride at the Bottom of the Stairs

Lena could barely understand Rafael’s words.
For most of her life, she had believed her mother had abandoned her.
Miriam Vale had disappeared when Lena was eighteen. There had been no goodbye, no letter, and no telephone call. Only a suitcase missing from the closet and a short message sent from an unknown number.
I love you. Forgive me.
Lena’s aunt had told her that Miriam had chosen a new life overseas. Lena had spent years pretending she did not care.
Now a hotel manager she had never met was kneeling beside her, staring at her as though she had returned from the dead.
Daniel stepped forward.
“My wife needs a doctor, not a story.”
The security officer blocked him.
“You’ll stay where you are, sir.”
Evelyn descended another step, forcing a trembling smile.
“This is becoming ridiculous. Lena lost her balance. We were all upset after the wedding reception.”
“She pushed me,” Lena said.
Her voice was weak, but the words carried through the lobby.
The guests standing beneath the chandeliers began whispering.
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“You were drinking.”
“I had half a glass of champagne.”
Daniel looked at Lena with the same expression he had used throughout their marriage whenever she questioned him: patient, disappointed, almost tender.
“Lena, you’re frightened. Let me help you.”
For the first time, she recognized the performance.
During the past year, Daniel had never raised his voice. He had never needed to. He corrected her memories, dismissed her suspicions, and made every concern sound unreasonable.
Now, sitting on the cold marble floor, Lena finally saw him clearly.
“I don’t want you near me,” she said.
A police siren sounded outside.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
Evelyn whispered something Lena could not hear.
May you like
But Rafael heard it.
“You said the camera was disabled.”
