Chapter 14 - The Exchange)

Elena did not go alone.
She also did not tell Lydia that.
Police planned surveillance.
Claire arranged duplicate copies of the ledger.
Martin stored digital scans in multiple locations.
The original was secured.
Elena carried a convincing reproduction inside the old black case.
The meeting location was an abandoned riverside restaurant thirty miles outside the city.
8:00 p.m.
Rain began at 6:20.
By 7:45, the road looked black beneath Elena's headlights.
She parked where instructed.
No other vehicles visible.
Her earpiece remained hidden.
Claire's voice came faintly.
"We have you."
Elena stepped out.
The restaurant had been closed for years.
Broken sign.
Covered windows.
One side door stood open.
Elena entered.
"Brandon?"
Nothing.
She moved through the old dining room.
Dust covered overturned chairs.
A light shone from the kitchen.
Lydia stood beside a stainless steel counter.
For one dizzy second Elena saw Margaret.
Then the differences emerged.
Lydia's hair was shorter.
Her expression harder.
Her eyes colder.
"You look like your father."
Elena held the case tightly.
"Where's Brandon?"
"Safe."
"I want to see him."
"You will."
"Now."
Lydia smiled faintly.
"You really are Tomas's daughter."
"Don't talk about him."
"Why?"
"You helped destroy his life."
Lydia's expression changed.
"Is that what Margaret told you?"
"The ledger told me enough."
"The ledger tells you what Tomas believed."
"Are you saying he was wrong?"
"I'm saying he was incomplete."
Elena placed the case on a table.
"Show me Brandon."
Lydia raised her phone.
Live video.
Brandon sat in a room.
Hands bound.
He looked tired but uninjured.
Elena forced herself not to react.
"Where is he?"
"Give me the ledger."
"First tell me why you need it."
"Because Serena wants it."
"Then why not let her have it?"
Lydia laughed.
"Because Serena thinks the ledger proves she inherited Victor's empire."
"It doesn't?"
"No."
"What does it prove?"
"That her father was a useful idiot."
Elena remembered Tomas's note.
VICTOR DOESN'T KNOW FULL SCOPE.
"L.R. controlled records."
Lydia's smile disappeared.
"So you found that."
"You were running it."
"Some of it."
"You stole identities."
"I built profiles."
"That's a comfortable phrase."
"I was twenty-six when Victor hired me. He wanted ways to make weak loans look strong."
"So you used real people."
"At first, people consented."
"And later?"
Lydia did not answer.
Elena's anger grew.
"You used me when I was seventeen."
"Victor did."
"Dad said you controlled records."
"I controlled systems. Victor chose targets."
"Why my identity?"
Lydia looked almost sad.
"Because of me."
Elena stared.
"Explain."
"Victor discovered I was your aunt. He wanted leverage."
"Against you?"
"And Tomas."
"Then why come back now?"
Lydia looked toward the dark windows.
"Because Serena found the old architecture."
"The system."
"Yes."
"She rebuilt it."
"She thought she did."
"What does that mean?"
Lydia stepped closer.
"Serena has spent years copying her father's methods. But she never understood why some identities were more valuable than others."
"Why was mine?"
Lydia looked at Elena.
"Because your father created a trap."
Elena went still.
"What trap?"
"Tomas altered the old records before he left Northbridge. He linked certain hidden accounts to verification sequences only he understood."
"Why?"
"To track them if Victor ever used them."
"And after Dad died?"
"Someone found the sequences."
"Who?"
"That's what I've been trying to discover."
"Was it Serena?"
"No."
"Brandon?"
"No."
"Warren?"
Lydia shook her head.
"Then who?"
Instead of answering, Lydia gestured toward the case.
"The ledger."
Elena did not move.
"Brandon first."
Lydia's eyes narrowed.
"You came wired."
Elena's heart stopped.
Lydia smiled.
"Your father taught me to watch reflections."
She pointed toward a stainless steel refrigerator door.
Elena saw the tiny earpiece reflected near her hair.
Police voices erupted in Elena's ear.
"Move out. Move out."
Lydia grabbed the case.
Elena caught her wrist.
The two women struggled.
The case hit the floor.
Pages scattered.
Lydia stared at them.
Then laughed.
"Copies."
Police entered from two doors.
"Hands where we can see them."
Lydia stepped back.
No weapon.
No resistance.
She raised her hands.
Elena stared.
"Where is Brandon?"
Lydia said nothing.
An officer cuffed her.
Elena moved closer.
"Where is he?"
Lydia looked almost amused.
"You thought I kidnapped him?"
"You sent the photograph."
"I sent a photograph."
"You tied him to a chair."
"He asked me to."
Elena froze.
"What?"
Lydia was led toward the exit.
Elena followed.
"Why would he do that?"
Lydia turned her head.
"Because he needed you to bring the ledger somewhere Serena's people could see it."
Claire entered.
"What are you talking about?"
Lydia smiled at Elena.
"Ask your husband."
Police searched the building.
No Brandon.
The live video location could not immediately be traced.
Lydia was taken into custody for questioning related to the break-in at Margaret's house, fraudulent banking access, and other possible offenses.
But the supposed kidnapping began falling apart.
Brandon had not been restrained against his will.
At least Lydia claimed he had not.
At 10:32 p.m., Elena's phone rang.
Brandon.
Claire motioned for silence.
Elena answered.
"Where are you?"
"I'm safe."
"Did Lydia kidnap you?"
"No."
Elena closed her eyes.
"You helped her."
"I needed Serena to believe Lydia had the original ledger."
"You used me again."
"I'm sorry."
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Then don't call me."
"Elena, listen."
"No."
"Serena was watching the restaurant."
Police began scanning roads and nearby properties.
Elena looked toward the dark windows.
"How do you know?"
"Because Warren was there."
"Where?"
"Across the river."
"Police didn't see anyone."
"He left before they moved in."
"Why stage everything?"
"To flush him out."
"You could have gotten me killed."
"I knew Lydia wouldn't hurt you."
"You knew nothing."
"You're right."
The answer disarmed her anger for half a second.
Brandon continued.
"But it worked."
"What worked?"
"Warren contacted Serena."
"And?"
"We traced the call."
"Where is she?"
"Not where everyone thinks."
"Where?"
A long pause.
"Northbridge."
Elena frowned.
"The bank?"
"Not the current bank."
"What are you talking about?"
"The original Northbridge property. Victor's old headquarters."
"Where is it?"
"Your father knew."
"My father is dead."
"He left the address somewhere."
"The ledger?"
"No."
"Then where?"
Brandon's voice became urgent.
"Elena, did Tomas ever give you a red notebook?"
"No."
"Think."
"No."
"Something red. Small. Leather."
Elena's eyes moved toward Claire.
A memory surfaced.
Not hers.
The security image.
Serena in Elena's hallway.
Holding Margaret's red leather folder.
But that was larger.
Then another memory.
Her father's funeral.
A small red book placed inside a box of personal effects.
Elena had given it to Margaret without opening it.
"Mom."
Claire immediately called Margaret.
Margaret answered.
Elena asked, "Dad's red notebook. Do you have it?"
Silence.
"Mom?"
Margaret's voice sounded strange.
"I did."
"Where is it?"
"I put it in the red folder with the deed."
The folder Serena had stolen.
Elena felt her stomach drop.
Brandon heard.
May you like
"Serena has it."
Then the call disconnected.
