Chapter 10 - What Her Father Knew)

Margaret began crying before Elena could ask a single question.

That frightened Elena more than the ledger.

"Mom."

Margaret sat at the kitchen table.

"I thought this ended."

"What ended?"

Her mother covered her mouth.

Claire sat opposite her.

"Margaret, whatever you know matters now."

Margaret looked at Elena.

"Your father made me promise."

"He's been dead seven years."

"I know."

"And someone is using my identity."

"I know."

"Then tell me."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"When you were seventeen, your father found something."

"What?"

"Money being moved through companies that didn't exist."

Claire asked, "At Northbridge?"

Margaret nodded.

"He had worked there years earlier, but an old colleague contacted him. Victor Vale was using borrower identities to support loans."

Elena stared at the ledger.

"Twenty years ago?"

"Yes."

"Serena was involved?"

"Your father believed she was learning from him."

"Why does the note mention me?"

Margaret's hands trembled.

"Because someone opened an account in your name."

Elena felt the room disappear around her.

"When I was seventeen?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"We closed it."

"How?"

"Your father threatened Victor."

"With what?"

"Records."

The ledger.

Claire asked, "Did he go to authorities?"

"No."

"Why?"

Margaret looked ashamed.

"Victor threatened Elena."

Elena pushed back from the table.

"What?"

"Not physically. He said if Tomas made accusations, there would be investigations. Your father's career could be destroyed. Your scholarship applications could become complicated. He knew where you went to school."

"That's a threat."

"Yes."

"And Dad backed down."

"He protected you."

Elena stood and walked toward the window.

For years she had idealized her father.

Kind.

Quiet.

Ethical.

Now she saw another version.

A frightened man holding evidence and choosing his family over justice.

She understood him.

That made her angrier.

"What happened after Victor died?"

"We believed it was finished."

"Did Serena contact Dad?"

"Once."

"When?"

"About a year before he died."

Elena turned.

"What did she want?"

"The ledger."

"Did he give it to her?"

"No."

"Did Brandon know about any of this?"

Margaret shook her head.

"I never told him."

Claire asked, "Did Tomas?"

Margaret hesitated.

That hesitation answered them.

Elena's voice dropped.

"Dad told Brandon."

"Not everything."

"When?"

"Before your wedding."

Elena felt physically struck.

"My father knew this family had once targeted my identity and told my future husband?"

"He told Brandon there were people connected to old financial dealings who should never get access to your records."

"And Brandon later gave Serena access to my records."

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Elena turned away.

The betrayal became almost unbearable.

Her father had warned him.

Brandon had known.

Not all the details perhaps, but enough.

Enough to recognize Serena's name.

Enough to understand the danger.

Enough to know what he was risking.

Claire photographed every page of the ledger.

Martin began cross-referencing names.

By evening, he had identified seven companies still active.

Three had ties to Vale Strategic Holdings.

Two to Warren Pierce.

One to Harker.

The final company surprised everyone.

Hale Property Advisory.

Brandon's business.

Elena stared at the entry.

But the date made no sense.

The ledger entry had been written nineteen years earlier.

Brandon was only nineteen then.

His company did not exist.

Claire examined the handwriting.

"Could this have been added later?"

Margaret shook her head.

"The case has been locked since Tomas died."

"Could he have updated the ledger before then?"

"Yes."

"Then maybe he wrote the company name within the last seven years."

Martin checked incorporation records.

Hale Property Advisory was formed eight years earlier.

A year before Tomas died.

That was possible.

Beside the company name, Tomas had written:

B.H. ASKED ABOUT VICTOR FILES. REFUSED.

Elena felt numb.

"B.H."

Claire said nothing.

They both knew.

Brandon Hale.

Elena called him.

Claire protested.

Elena ignored her.

Brandon answered immediately.

"Elena."

"My father knew about Harker."

Silence.

"He knew about Serena."

More silence.

"He wrote your initials in his ledger."

Brandon whispered, "You found it."

Elena's blood went cold.

"You knew the ledger existed."

"I knew Tomas kept records."

"Did you ask him for Victor Vale's files?"

Brandon did not answer.

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I was curious."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"Then tell me the truth."

Brandon exhaled slowly.

"Your father offered me money to leave you."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"He didn't trust me."

"Why?"

"Because of my father."

Elena frowned.

"Your father was a contractor."

"That's what I told you."

She gripped the phone harder.

"Who was he?"

"Someone who worked for Victor Vale."

The world shifted again.

Elena remembered meeting Brandon's father twice before he died.

A quiet man named William Hale.

He had seemed ordinary.

Brandon continued.

"Tomas recognized my last name."

"What did your father do for Victor?"

"He collected debts."

Margaret made a sound from across the room.

Elena turned.

Her mother had gone white.

"Mom?"

Margaret whispered, "William Hale."

"You knew him?"

Margaret stared at the floor.

"He came to our house once."

"When?"

"When you were seventeen."

Elena could barely breathe.

"The year someone opened an account in my name."

Margaret nodded.

Brandon spoke through the phone.

"Elena, your father didn't just know Serena's family."

Elena said nothing.

"Your families were connected long before you met me."

"And you knew."

"Eventually."

"How long?"

"Before we got married."

Elena closed her eyes.

Twelve years.

Every anniversary.

Every shared meal.

Every whispered promise.

All of it now contained a secret.

"Why did you marry me?"

Brandon's answer came slowly.

"At first?"

Elena opened her eyes.

May you like

"What do you mean, at first?"

"I met you because I was looking for the ledger."
