Chapter 12 - Margaret's Last Promise)

Margaret denied it.

Not hesitantly.

Not defensively.

Immediately.

"I have never been inside First Atlantic Bank."

Elena placed the access record on the table.

"It says you entered box 214 on May 17."

"I didn't."

Claire studied the signature.

"Does this look like yours?"

Margaret put on her reading glasses.

Her face tightened.

"It looks close."

"But?"

"I make the M differently."

Another forged signature.

Elena felt almost relieved.

Then Claire pointed to the surveillance image the bank had provided.

The woman entering the vault area had gray hair.

Similar height.

Similar coat.

Her face was turned toward the camera.

Margaret whispered, "Oh my God."

Elena stared.

The woman looked remarkably like her mother.

But she wasn't.

Claire zoomed in.

"Who is she?"

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

"I haven't seen her in forty years."

Elena turned.

"You know her?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"My sister."

Elena thought she had misheard.

"You don't have a sister."

"I do."

"You told me you were an only child."

"I lied."

The sentence opened another hidden room inside Elena's family history.

Margaret's sister was named Lydia.

Two years younger.

At twenty-three, Lydia began working for Victor Vale.

At twenty-five, she disappeared from the family.

Margaret claimed they had not spoken since.

"Why?"

"She stole from your grandparents."

"What did she steal?"

"Documents. Money. Jewelry."

"Why lie about her existence?"

"Because your father asked me to."

Claire frowned.

"Why would Tomas care?"

"Because Lydia worked for Victor."

Elena sat down.

Every path returned to Northbridge.

"Is she still alive?"

"I don't know."

"She accessed the box three months ago."

"If that's Lydia."

"It looks like you."

"We looked almost identical when we were younger."

Claire asked, "Could she have forged your signature?"

"Easily."

Elena whispered, "What was in the box?"

Margaret shook her head.

"I truly don't know."

"Brandon said Dad left something."

"He never told me."

Claire asked, "Why would Lydia know?"

Margaret looked toward the old ledger.

"Maybe Victor told her before he died."

Martin arrived with another discovery.

The bank's visitor log showed Lydia had not come alone.

A man signed her into a private conference room fifteen minutes before she accessed the box.

Name: Warren Pierce.

Claire stared.

"Of course."

Brandon's lawyer.

Serena's ally.

And apparently connected to Margaret's vanished sister.

Elena felt as if the conspiracy had existed before she was born.

Martin continued.

"There is more."

He had traced two of the stolen $170,000 transfers.

One had been frozen.

Fifty-five thousand dollars remained recoverable.

The other had moved twice but was located.

The third, $73,000, had disappeared into an account tied to Crown Meridian.

"Can we get it back?"

"Possibly through legal process."

For the first time in days, Elena felt something resembling victory.

Not complete.

But real.

The joint account was no longer simply gone.

Brandon's attempt to control the money had created a trail.

That trail was exposing Serena's network.

Then Claire's phone rang.

She listened without speaking.

Her expression hardened.

When the call ended, Elena asked, "What?"

"Police went to speak with Serena."

"And?"

"She's gone."

"Where?"

"Unknown."

"Warren?"

"His office says he's traveling."

Nathan?

Protective custody.

Brandon?

Also missing.

Elena stood.

"What do you mean missing?"

"He didn't return home last night. His phone is off."

Margaret whispered, "Maybe he ran."

Elena wanted to believe it.

Then a package arrived at Claire's office.

Courier.

No return name.

Inside was Brandon's wedding ring.

And a flash drive.

Claire called police before touching it further.

Digital forensics examined the drive in a controlled environment.

It contained one video.

Brandon sat in a dark room.

Timestamp: 4:12 that morning.

He looked directly at the camera.

"Elena, if you're seeing this, I didn't make it back."

Elena gripped Claire's hand without realizing it.

Brandon continued.

"I returned part of the money. Martin should find it."

Claire looked toward Martin.

He nodded.

The frozen fifty-five thousand.

"I gave investigators access to one account. Everything I could safely transfer is there."

Brandon's eyes looked exhausted.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

Elena felt tears come despite herself.

"I don't deserve that."

He paused.

"But Serena didn't increase your insurance."

Elena frowned.

"Neither did Warren."

Brandon leaned toward the camera.

"I found the authorization history."

A document appeared briefly on screen.

The application had originated from an office associated with Harker.

But the person who approved it used credentials belonging to someone else.

Brandon continued.

"The user account was created seven years ago."

The year Elena's father died.

"I thought Serena created it."

He shook his head.

"She didn't."

Elena's breathing slowed.

"The account was created by Tomas Ruiz."

Margaret gasped.

Elena stared at the screen.

Her father.

Brandon continued.

"I don't know why."

His voice became urgent.

"But someone has used Tomas's credentials repeatedly since his death."

Elena looked at Claire.

Brandon's final words played.

"Your father didn't leave you a ledger to expose Serena."

A pause.

May you like

"He left it to warn you about someone else."

The video ended.
