Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Trap

At 9:00 the next morning Meridian’s boardroom was full.

Directors.

Attorneys.

Investors.

Security.

Marcus arrived in a navy suit.

He looked rested.

Confident.

Almost sympathetic.

Danielle arrived wearing black.

Clara stayed elsewhere under protection.

Arthur came separately.

Marcus smiled when Danielle entered.

“You look tired.”

She sat opposite him.

“You look unemployed.”

Several directors shifted awkwardly.

Marcus ignored it.

His attorney began.

Questions regarding Danielle’s mental capacity.

Irregular executive decisions.

Concerns over unstable behavior.

A recent police incident.

Marcus presented Nathan’s signed evaluation.

Danielle let him.

Then forged ownership records.

Danielle let him.

Then Marcus described himself as a long-standing silent investor.

Danielle almost admired the performance.

When he finished, the chairman looked at her.

“Danielle, you have the floor.”

She stood.

“No.”

Confusion.

The chairman frowned.

“No?”

“I think Marcus should continue.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

Danielle smiled.

“Tell them about the voting agreement.”

His attorney whispered to him.

Marcus said, “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“The one that gives you control after our marriage if I become medically incompetent.”

Silence.

Marcus leaned back.

“I’ve never seen such a document.”

Danielle looked at the chairman.

“Play file one.”

A screen illuminated.

Email records.

Draft agreement.

Metadata.

Marcus’s private office computer.

His attorney stood.

“We object to—”

“This isn’t court,” Danielle said.

The chairman continued the video.

Marcus’s face hardened.

Danielle said, “File two.”

Nathan’s fake diagnosis.

The future date highlighted.

Several directors whispered.

“File three.”

Insurance policy.

Thirty million dollars.

Marcus’s beneficiary designation.

Marcus stood.

“This is fabricated.”

“Sit down.”

Arthur’s voice.

Marcus turned.

Arthur remained near the back wall.

Marcus stared at his father.

Arthur said again, “Sit.”

Marcus did.

Danielle continued.

“File four.”

The recording from the mansion.

Clara on her knees.

Evelyn with the rod.

Marcus speaking.

“That stupid bitch Danielle trusts me completely.”

Then Evelyn.

“Once Danielle signs, her company is fucking ours.”

The room went silent.

Marcus’s face finally broke.

Only slightly.

But Danielle saw it.

“Turn it off,” he said.

Danielle looked at him.

“No.”

The video showed Danielle escaping.

Marcus chasing her.

Then stopped.

The chairman removed his glasses.

Marcus’s attorney whispered urgently.

Marcus stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Security stepped toward him.

Danielle said, “Actually, it just started.”

The boardroom doors opened.

Lena entered with state officers.

Behind her came two federal investigators whose identities had been independently verified.

Marcus looked toward the opposite door.

Blocked.

Lena approached.

“Marcus Alexander Vance, you are being detained in connection with conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, assault, attempted corporate fraud and obstruction.”

Marcus laughed.

“Detained?”

“For now.”

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Lena cuffed him.

Marcus looked directly at Danielle.

This time there was no charm.

“You think this saves you?”

Danielle said nothing.

“You think I’m the one you should be afraid of?”

He leaned closer as Lena pulled him away.

“Ask Clara why she married Nathan.”

Danielle’s eyes narrowed.

Marcus smiled.

“She wasn’t the victim when this started.”

Then he was gone.

The room erupted.

Lawyers shouted.

Investors called assistants.

The board suspended all proposed votes.

Marcus’s ownership claims were frozen pending investigation.

Nathan’s medical evaluation was declared compromised.

Meridian remained Danielle’s company.

For approximately twenty minutes, Danielle felt she had won something.

Then Rachel entered.

Her face was pale.

“What?”

Rachel closed the door.

“The Shield architecture wasn’t stolen yesterday.”

Danielle stared.

“What do you mean?”

“The archive download was a distraction.”

Rachel placed a report on the table.

“Someone has been quietly copying pieces of Shield for seven years.”

Danielle’s stomach sank.

“Since Meridian started?”

“Since before.”

“That’s impossible.”

Rachel pointed to the first transfer date.

Three months before Meridian’s official incorporation.

Danielle whispered, “Who had access?”

Rachel looked at her.

“Thomas.”

Danielle closed her eyes.

Thomas again.

Rachel continued.

“But there’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“The copied architecture isn’t identical to Shield.”

Danielle frowned.

“It’s older.”

Arthur spoke from behind them.

“Jonathan’s version.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You know what this is?”

Arthur stared at the diagram.

“Yes.”

Danielle whispered, “What?”

Arthur’s answer erased any satisfaction from Marcus’s arrest.

“The system Jonathan built before the crash.”

He looked at Danielle.

“Meridian wasn’t created to invent Shield.”

May you like

Arthur touched the diagram.

“It was created to rebuild something that had been lost.”
