Chapter 8 - The False Badges

Lena fired first.

The bullet struck the fake agent’s shoulder.

Chaos erupted.

Arthur pulled Danielle behind a concrete freezer.

Clara crawled toward the rear exit.

Gunfire hammered through the walls.

Lena shouted, “Move!”

They escaped through the back.

A state vehicle accelerated toward them.

Real state investigators pulled them inside.

The marina disappeared behind smoke.

Two fake federal agents were captured.

One died.

Three escaped.

Their credentials were perfect.

So were their uniforms.

But no corresponding federal assignments existed.

Someone had known Danielle contacted cybersecurity officials.

Someone had inserted an armed team into the response within hours.

The conspiracy was no longer a family crime.

It had infrastructure.

At the secure state facility, one captured attacker refused to speak.

Then investigators found something in his wallet.

A photograph.

Marcus Vance.

Age nineteen.

Standing beside the attacker.

Danielle stared.

“Marcus knows him.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Not just knows.”

He recognized the man.

“His name is Reed Dalton.”

Former private security contractor.

Arthur hired him twenty years earlier.

“To protect my family.”

Lena said, “Apparently he stayed loyal to someone.”

Arthur whispered, “Evelyn.”

Danielle wanted Evelyn arrested.

Immediately.

But Evelyn had vanished.

So had Marcus.

Nathan’s medical license records revealed another surprise.

He was not currently licensed in the state.

His listed clinic had been closed for nine months.

Yet prescriptions continued being issued in his name.

Clara sat wrapped in a blanket.

“Marrow.”

Danielle turned.

“What?”

“Everything goes through Marrow.”

Investigators searched the foundation.

The public organization funded neurological research.

Memory disorders.

Trauma recovery.

Cognitive rehabilitation.

But corporate filings led through six shell companies.

One connected to Evelyn.

Another connected to Marcus.

A third connected to an entity called Gatehouse Management.

Gatehouse’s registered director was Jonathan Vance.

Danielle stared at the screen.

“So Jonathan is involved.”

Clara shook her head.

“He said Gatehouse was stolen from him.”

“Convenient.”

Arthur did not defend his son.

That mattered.

At 4:18 P.M., Meridian security called.

Someone had entered Danielle’s private office.

Nothing stolen.

One object left behind.

A wooden box.

Bomb technicians cleared it.

Inside was an engagement ring.

Danielle’s engagement ring.

She looked at her hand.

Still wearing the original.

The second ring appeared identical.

Underneath it was a note.

One of us proposed to you.

The other one owns the ring.

Danielle felt nauseated.

Lena frowned.

“Meaning?”

Arthur understood first.

“The ring was purchased under someone else’s identity.”

They traced it.

The purchase had been made eleven months earlier by Jonathan Vance.

Danielle laughed in disbelief.

“So Marcus used his dead brother’s money to buy my ring?”

Arthur said, “Or Jonathan wants you to believe he did.”

The ring contained a micro-storage device.

Inside were photographs.

Marcus meeting Nathan.

Nathan meeting Evelyn.

Evelyn meeting Reed Dalton.

Then something worse.

Thomas Reid.

Alive.

Photographed six months after his supposed death.

Danielle sat down.

“No.”

Thomas died in hospice.

She visited him.

Held his hand.

Watched his breathing weaken.

Attended the funeral.

Yet the photograph was unmistakable.

Thomas walking into Marrow Clinical Research Foundation.

Date:

May 14.

Last year.

Thomas had officially died the previous November.

Clara whispered, “Jonathan told me Thomas was dead.”

Danielle’s anger sharpened.

“Then Jonathan lied.”

Arthur looked at the image.

“Or Thomas lied to Jonathan.”

Danielle stared at her dead mentor walking through a clinic connected to the conspiracy.

Her phone rang.

Rachel.

Danielle answered.

“We have a problem,” Rachel said.

“Another one?”

“Board emergency meeting.”

“Who called it?”

“Marcus.”

“He has no authority.”

“He submitted documentation showing he owns twelve percent of Meridian.”

Danielle almost laughed.

“He owns zero.”

“Not according to the documents.”

“Forged.”

“Maybe. But two institutional investors accepted them.”

“How?”

Rachel hesitated.

“They’re asking whether you’re mentally fit to remain CEO.”

Danielle became still.

The fake medical evaluation.

Nathan’s diagnosis.

Marcus was using the plan before the wedding.

Rachel continued.

“The board vote is tomorrow morning.”

“To remove me?”

“Yes.”

Danielle looked toward Clara.

Marcus had failed to get her signature.

So he changed tactics.

Destroy credibility.

Manufacture ownership.

Seize the company publicly.

Danielle whispered, “Fine.”

Rachel said, “Fine?”

“Let him call the meeting.”

“You have a plan?”

Danielle looked at the video she had recorded.

Marcus mocking her.

Evelyn threatening Clara.

The false medical documents.

The insurance policy.

The fake ownership papers.

For the first time since the nightmare began, Danielle smiled.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Marcus wants the board?”

May you like

Danielle stood.

“Let’s give him an audience.”
