Chapter 7 - The Meeting at Marrow Lake

The coordinates led to an abandoned marina.
Lena arranged surveillance.
Federal cybersecurity agents arrived separately.
Arthur hated every second of it.
Danielle did not care.
At 11:58, a gray sedan approached.
Stopped.
Clara stepped out.
Danielle ran before anyone could stop her.
“Clara!”
Clara turned.
Danielle reached her and wrapped both arms around her.
Clara shook violently.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
“You told me to find Jonathan.”
“I didn’t know if the message would send.”
Danielle pulled back.
“Where is he?”
Clara looked toward the car.
Empty.
“He was here.”
Arthur approached slowly.
“Clara.”
She stared at him.
“He left ten minutes ago.”
“Why?”
“He saw the surveillance.”
Lena came forward.
Clara laughed without humor.
“Told you.”
“We needed protection,” Danielle said.
“You don’t know who the protection works for.”
Lena showed her badge.
“State financial crimes.”
Clara looked at it.
“Pike had one too.”
Fair.
Danielle took Clara’s hands.
“Tell me everything.”
Clara looked toward Arthur.
“Not here.”
They moved into an abandoned bait shop.
Clara told the story.
A year earlier Nathan became obsessed with her access to Danielle.
He asked about company passwords.
Signing authority.
Medical history.
Clara became suspicious.
She searched his office.
Found files on Danielle.
Then Marcus.
Then Meridian.
Then Project Widow.
Nathan caught her.
At first he apologized.
Said he had been pressured.
Promised to stop.
Clara believed him for three days.
Then he injected her with something.
She woke inside a private room at Marrow Clinical Research Foundation.
She remained there eleven days.
Drugged.
Questioned.
Threatened.
A man visited her every night but stayed behind glass.
Jonathan.
“He helped me escape,” Clara said.
Arthur stared.
“You’re sure it was him?”
“He showed me the scar.”
“That proves nothing.”
“He knew what you said to him when he was eight after he broke the greenhouse window.”
Arthur’s face changed.
Clara repeated it.
“Real men admit what they break before someone else bleeds cleaning it.”
Arthur sat heavily.
Jonathan.
Alive.
Danielle asked, “Why didn’t he come home?”
Clara looked toward her.
“Because he says Evelyn tried to kill him.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Clara continued.
“The crash wasn’t an accident.”
Evelyn had discovered that Jonathan found hidden financial records connected to a private network.
A network using medical foundations, charities and investment companies to move money and influence.
Jonathan intended to tell Arthur.
The crash happened first.
Marcus was in the vehicle.
He remembered more than he admitted.
Danielle whispered, “Marcus was nine.”
“He watched Evelyn leave Jonathan inside the car.”
Arthur’s face went gray.
“No.”
Clara’s voice softened.
“Arthur…”
“No.”
“He says Marcus tried to go back.”
Arthur stood so fast the chair fell.
“No.”
Danielle watched him.
A lifetime was collapsing inside the man.
Clara continued anyway.
“Someone else pulled Jonathan out before the fire reached him.”
“Who?”
“Thomas Reid.”
Danielle stared.
Her mentor.
Thomas hid Jonathan.
Moved him.
Created new identities.
Used Dominion Gate money to keep him alive.
Arthur whispered, “Why not tell me?”
“Jonathan says they didn’t know if Evelyn controlled you.”
Arthur laughed once.
Broken.
“For twenty-six years?”
“He stopped trusting anyone.”
Danielle asked, “Then why fund Meridian?”
Clara looked at her.
“Because you were never random.”
Danielle felt something drop inside her.
“What does that mean?”
Clara hesitated.
“Thomas chose you.”
“For what?”
“To finish what Jonathan started.”
Danielle shook her head.
“I met Thomas at a technology conference.”
“No.”
Clara’s eyes filled with sympathy.
“He arranged it.”
Danielle stepped back.
“No.”
“He had been watching your work since college.”
“Why me?”
“I don’t know.”
A gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
Arthur pulled Clara down.
Lena drew her weapon.
Federal agents shouted outside.
A second gunshot.
Then engines.
The gray sedan exploded.
Flames consumed the marina entrance.
Danielle covered her head as glass fell.
Lena shouted into her radio.
“Shooter north ridge!”
Clara grabbed Danielle.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
Clara looked terrified.
“I don’t know.”
A phone began ringing on the floor.
Not Danielle’s.
Not Arthur’s.
A burner phone had been taped beneath the table.
Lena stared at it.
Danielle answered.
Jonathan’s voice came through.
“Now you understand why I don’t attend family reunions.”
Danielle looked toward the burning car.
“Where are you?”
“Safer than you.”
“Did you know this would happen?”
“Yes.”
Danielle’s anger exploded.
“You used us as bait?”
“I needed to know which team would fire first.”
“What team?”
Jonathan became quiet.
Then said:
“The one Arthur brought.”
Danielle slowly turned toward Arthur.
Arthur stared at her.
Jonathan continued.
May you like
“Your federal agents aren’t federal agents.”
Outside, one of the supposed cybersecurity officers raised his weapon toward the bait shop.
