Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Wasn’t Missing

Nathan disconnected.
Lena immediately sent the number for tracing.
Danielle stared at the burner phone.
For eight months Clara had described Nathan as controlling.
Jealous.
Possessive.
She had never said dangerous.
Danielle wondered whether that silence came from shame, fear or strategy.
A new message arrived.
A location pin.
An abandoned medical office twelve miles away.
Then:
Come alone if you want Clara alive.
Lena shook her head.
“You’re not going.”
Danielle looked at her.
“I am.”
“No.”
“I didn’t say I’m going alone.”
For the first time that night, Lena almost smiled.
At 2:22 A.M., state officers surrounded the medical office.
Danielle remained two blocks away inside Lena’s vehicle.
No Clara.
No Nathan.
Only a chair positioned beneath a surgical light.
On the chair was Clara’s dirty white T-shirt.
Blood stained the collar.
Danielle stopped breathing.
Then an officer found a television.
It turned on automatically.
Nathan appeared on-screen.
Pre-recorded.
He wore a white medical coat.
His face looked tired but calm.
“Danielle, you have spent your entire life confusing independence with intelligence.”
Danielle clenched her jaw.
Nathan continued.
“Clara discovered parts of our arrangement almost a year ago. Unfortunately, she misunderstood her role.”
The video changed.
Security footage.
Clara breaking into an office.
Copying files.
Photographing records.
Nathan returned.
“Your sister likes to believe she escaped me. She did not. We allowed her to leave because she was more useful frightened than dead.”
Another image appeared.
Danielle entering Meridian.
Marcus kissing her outside the building.
Nathan said, “Marcus did love you, in his way.”
Danielle felt sick.
“Love simply wasn’t the most valuable thing you possessed.”
The screen went black.
Then returned.
Nathan held up a file.
“Ask Arthur why Project Widow exists.”
The video ended.
Danielle whispered, “Arthur.”
Lena looked toward her.
“You still think he helped you?”
“He opened the gate.”
“That proves he wanted you outside the mansion. It doesn’t prove why.”
At 3:10 A.M., Arthur voluntarily arrived at the state investigation office.
He came alone.
No lawyer.
Danielle watched him through one-way glass.
He sat straight in the interview room.
Calm.
Cold.
Almost bored.
Lena entered.
Danielle remained behind the glass.
“Mr. Vance.”
Arthur nodded.
“Detective.”
“You know Nathan Cole?”
“Yes.”
“You know about Project Widow?”
Silence.
“Mr. Vance?”
“Yes.”
Danielle’s throat tightened.
Lena placed the insurance document on the table.
“Did you create this?”
“No.”
“Did you know it existed?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“How?”
“Clara.”
Danielle closed her eyes.
The photograph.
Their meeting.
Lena leaned forward.
“Why didn’t you contact law enforcement?”
Arthur’s expression remained unchanged.
“Because law enforcement had already been contacted.”
Lena paused.
“By whom?”
“Clara.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“What happened?”
“The report disappeared.”
Lena’s face changed slightly.
Arthur continued.
“Two weeks later, the detective assigned to it purchased a lake house.”
“Name.”
“Gerald Pike.”
Lena knew the name.
Danielle could tell.
Arthur said, “Clara came to me because she believed I was the only person Marcus feared.”
“Does he?”
“No.”
Arthur almost smiled.
“He should.”
Lena placed a second document down.
“What was your plan?”
“To let Marcus believe he was winning.”
Danielle stared through the glass.
Lena said, “By allowing Clara to be beaten?”
Arthur’s eyes hardened.
“No.”
“Danielle recorded Clara being assaulted in your home.”
“I know.”
“You were there.”
“I was upstairs with twenty-eight guests.”
“You own the house.”
“My wife controls the domestic staff.”
Lena leaned back.
“Convenient.”
Arthur said nothing.
Danielle opened the interview-room door.
Lena turned.
Arthur looked at her.
Danielle walked inside.
“Where is Clara?”
Arthur’s face changed for the first time.
Pain.
Barely visible.
“I don’t know.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m not.”
“You knew what they were doing.”
“I knew some of it.”
“You knew Marcus planned to steal my company.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Nathan forged medical documents.”
“Yes.”
“You knew they had an insurance policy.”
“Yes.”
Danielle slapped him.
The sound filled the room.
Arthur did not move.
Danielle’s eyes burned.
“You knew they planned to kill me.”
Arthur looked directly at her.
“I knew they wanted you dead.”
Danielle whispered, “And you did nothing.”
“I was trying to identify everyone involved.”
“My sister was being tortured in your house.”
Arthur lowered his eyes.
“I did not know she was in that room until tonight.”
Danielle stepped closer.
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because Clara trusted me.”
“She also trusted Nathan once.”
That landed.
Arthur inhaled slowly.
Then reached into his jacket.
Lena’s hand moved toward her weapon.
Arthur stopped.
“Photograph.”
Lena removed it for him.
An old image.
Two boys.
Teenagers.
Arthur said, “Marcus was not our first son.”
Danielle stared.
“What?”
“My wife and I had another boy.”
He tapped the older child.
“Jonathan.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“He died twenty-six years ago.”
Arthur looked toward Danielle.
“Except three months ago Clara brought me evidence that Jonathan may still be alive.”
Silence filled the room.
Danielle frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“I buried him.”
“What happened?”
“Car accident. The body was badly burned.”
Arthur’s voice changed.
“My wife identified him.”
Danielle looked at Lena.
Then back at Arthur.
“And Clara thinks he survived?”
“No.”
Arthur pointed toward Marcus.
“She thinks Marcus knows he survived.”
The room became very still.
Arthur continued.
“Project Widow did not begin with you, Danielle.”
May you like
His next words changed the direction of the entire investigation.
“It began twenty-six years ago.”
