Chapter 7 - The Dead Man's Bracelet)

Samuel Mercer had died at home, according to the certificate Claire signed.

She had been with him during his final night. She remembered the oxygen machine, rain against the windows, and Ryan standing in the hallway while Samuel asked for five private minutes with his daughter.

"Do not surrender your name," her father had told her.

At the time, Claire thought he meant she should keep Mercer professionally after marrying Ryan. Now the sentence sounded like a warning against something much larger.

Detective Cho placed the bracelet in an evidence bag on her desk. The hospital name had been partially melted, but the patient number remained legible.

"We called the facility," Cho said. "They have no record of Samuel Mercer."

"Then the bracelet is fake."

"Possibly. Or the record was removed."

Maya examined the number. "The prefix belongs to St. Catherine's private neurological wing."

Claire turned. "How do you know that?"

"My mother received treatment there."

Again, the answer came easily. Again, Claire could not decide whether it was truth or preparation.

Cho asked about Samuel's death. Claire described pancreatic cancer, months of decline, and a private nurse named Helen Price. The funeral home had received a sealed coffin because Samuel requested no viewing. Claire had honored the request despite how strange it felt.

"Who identified the body?" Cho asked.

"Ryan handled it. I couldn't."

Cho and Maya exchanged a glance.

Claire's knees weakened. "Are you saying my father might be alive?"

"I am saying we verify everything," Cho replied.

The cemetery opened Samuel's mausoleum under court order that evening. Claire waited in the rain beside Maya while forensic technicians entered. Two hours later, Cho emerged.

"The coffin contains remains," she said. "We need DNA testing to confirm identity."

"How long?"

"We can have a preliminary result tomorrow."

Claire returned to the penthouse for the first time since New Year's Eve. Police had released it after documenting the damage. The home smelled of smoke and chemicals. Without the Whitmores, its scale felt less luxurious than lonely.

She changed the locks, revoked every access code, and hired security that answered only to her. Then she walked through each room, making an inventory of what Grant's family had treated as theirs.

The penthouse had been a gift from Samuel before her marriage. Ryan persuaded her to let his parents stay during renovations to their townhouse. The renovations lasted two years. Grant hosted business dinners there. Diane replaced the furniture. Brooke occupied a guest suite. Claire had gradually become a visitor in her own home.

That ended now.

She ordered every Whitmore possession packed, photographed, and moved to secured storage. Grant's tuxedos, Diane's jewelry cases, Brooke's unopened shopping bags, Ryan's golf trophies. Nothing was destroyed. Nothing could be turned into another lie.

In Ryan's dressing room, Claire found a hidden compartment behind a shoe rack. Inside were three disposable phones and a small ultrasound photograph.

The image was dated ten weeks before Claire's first pregnancy appointment.

Patient name: EVELYN SHAW.

Claire stared at the tiny shape on the screen.

Evelyn had been pregnant when she disappeared.

On the back, Ryan had written, MY SON, MY SECOND CHANCE.

Claire felt sick.

She charged the disposable phones. Two contained only coded financial messages. The third held dozens of unsent drafts addressed to someone listed as E.

I did what Dad demanded because I thought you were dead.

I kept Northstar alive for him.

Claire is not part of this.

You promised the boy would never know me.

The final draft had been written three days earlier.

Dad knows where you are. Take Noah and run.

Claire called Detective Cho. Before the detective could answer, another message appeared on the phone.

It was a live photograph of Brooke tied to a chair. Behind her stood a teenage boy with Ryan's eyes.

The message read:

BRING THE NORTHSTAR RING TO PIER 14 AT MIDNIGHT. NO POLICE. ONE LIFE FOR ANOTHER.
