Chapter 10 - The Husband's Bargain)

Ryan gave Claire six hours.
The live feed lasted twenty-nine seconds, but it revealed more than he intended. A train horn sounded twice. Sunlight entered through high windows from the east. Behind Samuel was a faded safety sign carrying the logo of Mercer Steel Works, a factory Claire's father had closed when she was twelve.
There were three former Mercer factories near rail lines. Detective Cho sent teams to all of them.
Claire concentrated on the people in the video. Samuel looked thinner, with a scar along his temple and two fingers splinted. Evelyn sat upright, watching Ryan with controlled hatred. Neither appeared drugged.
Ryan held the gun incorrectly. His finger rested outside the trigger guard.
"He's performing for someone," Claire said.
Cho agreed. "Grant may be behind the camera."
"Or Ryan wants us to believe he is."
The demand for the deed made little legal sense. Ownership could not be transferred by handing over a document. But the original deed contained Samuel's embossed corporate seal, a relic required by one obscure clause in the Northstar partnership agreement. Whoever held the seal could unlock an offshore custody account long enough to redirect it.
The missing pension money had been returned. Grant was not trying to hide theft anymore. He was trying to reach something larger.
At two in the afternoon, Claire received private instructions to bring the deed to the abandoned Mercer factory in Newark. She would enter alone through the west loading door.
Cho objected. "You are pregnant, and we have no clean view inside."
"Ryan expects me. If I refuse, Grant moves them again."
Maya produced the original deed from a secure cabinet. "We give him a certified copy with a false seal. It will survive visual inspection but fail at the custodian."
"And if he tests it inside?"
"Then we gain time."
Claire wore body armor beneath a loose coat. Cho's team placed trackers in her shoes, bag, and the deed tube. Maya remained at the command vehicle with Noah and Brooke, who had discharged herself against medical advice.
The factory smelled of rust and old rain. Claire entered through the loading door and followed a row of battery lamps across the floor.
Ryan waited in the center of the vast assembly hall.
He was alone.
"Where are they?" Claire asked.
"Safe for now. Give me the deed."
"Let me see my father."
Ryan lifted a tablet. The live image showed Samuel and Evelyn in a small office. A red digital clock sat on the desk between them.
"There is a device under that desk," Ryan said. "Grant controls it remotely. If I do not send him the seal code in twelve minutes, he activates it."
Claire studied him. "Why should I believe you?"
"Because I came without a gun."
"You held one in the video."
"Grant needed you to think I controlled this. He has Diane. He has people watching Brooke's hospital. He has spent thirty years preparing exits."
"You stole from my father."
"I moved the pension money before Grant could. Evelyn returned it after I gave her the access key."
"You falsified my medical records."
Ryan's eyes lowered. "I needed the court to freeze the deed until I could get you away."
"You called me unstable in front of the world."
"I chose a lie I thought I could reverse."
"And when your father moved a cigarette toward our son?"
Ryan's control cracked. "I thought he would stop."
"That is what cowards call a decision when they want innocence afterward."
The clock on the tablet showed nine minutes.
Ryan extended his hand. "Hate me later. Save them now."
Claire gave him the tube.
He removed the deed, felt the embossed seal, and looked at her with something like apology.
"It's false," he said.
Claire's stomach tightened.
"You still tap your thumbnail against your finger when you bluff," Ryan continued. "You did it at poker on our third date."
He tore the copy in half.
The factory lights came on.
Men stepped from behind the machinery. Grant emerged on an overhead walkway with Diane beside him. Her hands were bound.
"You disappointed me, son," Grant called.
Ryan moved in front of Claire.
"Let her leave."
"She is carrying the only Whitmore who may still be useful."
Claire looked up. "My son is a Mercer."
Grant smiled. "That is why the first theft was never money. Samuel stole a bloodline, and tonight I am taking it back."
An explosion shook the eastern wall.
Police flooded the factory. Grant's men scattered. Ryan pulled Claire behind a steel press as bullets struck the floor. Diane dropped to her knees on the walkway.
In the confusion, Grant vanished through a maintenance door.
Cho reached Claire and Ryan. She handcuffed Ryan despite his protest and sent officers toward the office shown in the video.
They found the red clock, the wires, and two empty chairs.
Samuel and Evelyn were gone.

On the wall, written in fresh black paint, were the words:
CLAIRE, ASK MAYA WHO YOUR REAL FATHER IS.
