Chapter 6 - Samuel's Last Warning)

Claire stopped the recorder.
In the silence of Vault 317, her father's final word seemed to remain in the air.
Killer.
Maya stood just outside the private room, arguing with the bank manager about attorney access. Brooke waited in the car. Either woman could have led Claire to Evelyn. Either woman could be the person Samuel feared.
Or Ryan might have known about the key and manipulated Brooke into delivering it.
Claire opened the sealed letter. It contained only four lines.
The first theft was not money.
Evelyn knows what Northstar means.
Trust evidence, not grief.
The child must never belong to them.
Claire read the last line again. Her father had written the letter before she became pregnant. What child had he meant?
The vault door opened behind her. Maya entered with the manager.
"We have a problem," Maya said. "Ryan filed an emergency guardianship petition. He claims you are medically impaired. A judge has temporarily restricted access to all Mercer accounts."
"Can he do that?"
"For a few hours, with the right affidavit and the right judge. The hearing is at noon."
The bank manager extended his hand toward the red case. "Until ownership is resolved, the contents must remain here."
Claire slid the ring, recorder, and letter into her bag. "They were released with my key. Your cameras have recorded that. If you want them back, obtain an order."
The manager blocked the door. Maya stepped between them and spoke so quietly that he retreated.
They reached the lobby as television screens began showing Claire's wedding photograph beneath the words PREGNANT HEIRESS MISSING.
Two police officers entered through the revolving doors.
Maya took Claire's elbow. "Do exactly what I say."
Claire pulled free. "No more hiding."
She walked directly toward the officers, identified herself, and told them she wanted to report an assault, attempted coercion, financial fraud, and a deliberately false missing-person complaint. She handed over a copy of her recording but kept the original phone.
The younger officer listened to Grant's voice ordering Claire out after threatening her. His posture changed.
"Mrs. Whitmore, we need you to come with us."
"Am I under arrest?"
"No."
"Then my attorney and I will meet detectives at the district office after my medical examination."
Maya hid a small smile.
Outside, Brooke was gone.
The car door stood open. On the seat lay her phone and a drop of fresh blood.
Claire ran to the curb. A traffic camera faced the intersection, but its lens had been sprayed black. Maya called the police officers back while Claire checked Brooke's phone.
The most recent message came from Diane.
I WILL TELL YOU WHERE EVELYN IS. COME ALONE OR GRANT WILL MOVE HER AGAIN.
Brooke had replied with one word.
WHERE?
Diane sent an address in Queens.
Maya read it over Claire's shoulder. "It could be a trap."
"It was a trap. Brooke walked into it."
"Then the police handle it."
Claire studied her father's letter. The person who gave you this key can lead you to Evelyn.
Brooke had given her the key. Perhaps not because Brooke knew Evelyn's location, but because the Whitmores would use Brooke to expose it.
The police searched the address. It was an abandoned print shop with no sign Brooke had ever arrived. Her route had vanished after she crossed the Queensboro Bridge.
At the district office, Claire gave a full statement. A detective named Lena Cho documented the scorched dress and sent officers to the penthouse. Grant's attorney refused entry. Ryan repeated that Claire was unstable. Diane and Grant denied the cigarette had ever come near her.
Only Brooke could confirm the family's silence, and Brooke was missing.
At eleven forty, Maya drove Claire to family court. Reporters crowded the steps. Ryan stood before them, asking the public to pray for his wife and unborn son.
They had agreed not to learn the baby's sex.
Claire stopped halfway up the steps.
"How does he know it's a boy?"
Maya looked at her.
"My doctor knew," Claire said. "I asked her to keep it sealed in my file."
"Ryan may have accessed the medical portal."
"Or the Whitmores have been planning around this baby longer than I knew."
Inside the courtroom, Ryan's lawyer produced medical records describing Claire as paranoid, emotionally volatile, and noncompliant with treatment. The signature belonged to a psychiatrist Claire had never met.
Maya dismantled the claims one by one. She showed the judge Claire's clean prescription history, the police report, the deed, and the recording. Ryan's emergency petition collapsed within twenty minutes.
The judge restored Claire's authority and ordered Ryan to stay two hundred yards away from her pending a full hearing.
It was the first victory.
It should have felt better.
As Claire left the courtroom, Detective Cho called. Police had entered the penthouse. Grant, Diane, and Ryan were gone. The study had been emptied, the safe burned from within, and every computer destroyed.
But the officers had found one thing beneath the ashes.

A hospital bracelet bearing Samuel Mercer's name.
The date printed on it was three days after his funeral.
