Chapter 15 - The Name on the Final Page)

Claire told no one about the package for twelve hours.
She photographed every surface, sealed the envelope in a clean bag, and copied Evelyn's message by hand. Then she examined the ring beside the one Noah carried. The engravings aligned to form a sequence of numbers invisible unless both bands touched.
Noah entered the kitchen while she was testing them beneath a magnifying lamp.
"Mom sent it," he said.
"How do you know?"
"She makes the letter A like a triangle."
Claire showed him the photograph. Relief crossed his face, followed by suspicion older than he was.
"Why didn't she come home?"
"Because she thinks someone is still watching us."
"Someone is always watching us."
Claire wished she could deny it.
She brought the package to Maya and Samuel at the Hudson house. Before showing them the message, she asked to inspect the original scan of the deed ledger. The microscopic strip ended with transaction page 211. Its encrypted index referenced page 212, but the final page was absent.
"Who handled the deed before it reached the vault?" Claire asked.
Samuel listed himself, Maya, and Ryan. After Samuel's abduction, Ryan controlled the penthouse and could have removed the page. But Ryan had confessed to crimes already documented on page 211. Whatever remained was more dangerous than his own guilt.
Maya examined the aligned rings. "This number may be an archive address."
"Northstar's custodian?"
"No. It begins with a diplomatic routing prefix."
Samuel looked toward the windows. "Victor said Grant never owned the network. He managed its American branch for someone else."
Claire placed Evelyn's note before him. "Who?"
"I never learned the name. Victor called that person the Benefactor."
"Is the Benefactor on page 212?"
"If Victor found proof, yes."
Claire felt the shape of the next battle. Grant had fallen publicly, but his escape had not been random. Daniel may not have rescued him. He may have taken him to the person whose secrets Grant failed to protect.
They contacted Agent Reed and disclosed only that Evelyn appeared alive. Reed requested the physical package. Claire provided the envelope and photograph but kept the ring, claiming it had not been included.
Reed accepted the lie too easily.
"We believe the photograph was taken near Montreal," he said. "Our partners will search."
After he left, Maya checked the image metadata. It had been stripped, but the printed photograph used paper sold exclusively by a studio in Washington, D.C.
Evelyn was not fleeing north. She was near the center of the federal investigation.
Claire hired an independent forensic accountant named Priya Desai to reconstruct page 212 from the ledger index. Priya worked in isolation for four days, tracing checksum fragments through old Northstar files. Her conclusion arrived the morning Claire went into labor.
Contractions began before sunrise. Claire was at Samuel's house, making tea while Noah slept upstairs. A sharp pain folded her against the counter. Samuel called the hospital. During the drive, Claire's phone rang repeatedly from an unknown number.
At the maternity ward, doctors moved quickly. The baby's heartbeat dipped, recovered, then dipped again. Claire gripped Samuel's hand and heard Ryan's old voice in memory, promising he would be beside her for this day.
He had stolen enough. He would not occupy this moment too.
Claire's son was born just after noon, healthy and furious, with dark hair and a cry that filled the room. Claire held him against her chest and named him Victor Samuel Mercer, honoring two fathers without surrendering him to either man's secrets.
No Whitmore name appeared on the birth announcement.
Samuel wept when he held the child. Noah stood on tiptoe beside the bed and counted the baby's fingers twice. Maya brought white roses. Brooke sent a letter without asking to visit. Diane, awaiting sentencing, sent nothing.
For six quiet hours, Claire allowed the war to remain outside.
Then Priya arrived carrying a sealed folder.
"I found the missing name," she said.
Claire looked at her sleeping son. "Tell me."
"Not here. Your room was accessed twice by someone using federal credentials."
Maya checked the hall. The security officer assigned by Agent Reed had disappeared.
They moved Claire and the baby to another floor under a false name. In a locked consultation room, Priya opened the folder.
Page 212 had not been a list of accounts. It was an ownership declaration. Northstar's hidden assets, now worth nearly four billion dollars, were controlled through a foundation whose protector could override every heir.
The protector's signature was reproduced at the bottom.
MAYA ELENA TORRES.
Claire looked across the table at her attorney.
Maya did not appear surprised.
Samuel rose from his chair. "Explain."
"The signature is genuine," Maya said.
No one moved.
"Victor appointed me when I was nineteen. I believed the foundation held evidence, not money. By the time I learned the truth, Grant had killed him. I kept control hidden because disclosure would have made Claire and Evelyn targets."
"We became targets anyway," Claire said.
"Yes."
"Did you remove the page?"
Maya looked at the baby, then back at Claire. "No. Evelyn did."
"Why?"
"Because she believed I killed Victor."
Samuel struck the table with his good hand. "Did you?"
Before Maya could answer, the hospital lights failed.
Emergency power came on seconds later. The locked consultation-room door stood open.
Priya's folder was gone.
So was the baby.
Claire did not scream. Terror became the same cold force she had felt on New Year's Eve when Grant's cigarette moved toward her belly. She ran into the corridor barefoot, tearing open doors while alarms began to sound.
At the service elevator, she found the white blanket that had wrapped Victor. Inside it lay the soap chess queen and a phone.
The phone displayed a live video.
Evelyn sat in the back of a moving car, holding Claire's son safely against her chest. Grant was beside her, pale and wounded. Daniel drove. Agent Reed occupied the front passenger seat.
Evelyn looked into the camera.
"Claire, your baby is safe with me. But if Maya reaches the Northstar archive first, none of us will be."
Grant smiled weakly. "Happy New Year, Claire."
The camera turned toward the road. A sign announced an airport three miles ahead.
Then Claire noticed a reflection in the window, the face of someone sitting just outside the camera's view.
Ryan.
He was no longer wearing prison clothes.
The video ended.
Claire opened the second message on the phone. It contained coordinates, a departure time, and one final sentence.
BRING MAYA AND BOTH RINGS IF YOU WANT YOUR SON BACK. COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT, AND YOU WILL FINALLY LEARN WHICH FATHER STARTED THE FIRE.
Claire closed her hand around the Northstar ring.
May you like
Behind her, Maya whispered, "There is one more thing Samuel never told you."
The elevator doors opened onto darkness.
