Chapter 8 - the truck that should not have moved

The caller's name was Jason Bell.

He had been an apprentice mechanic at Dennis Auto for nine months.

He quit two weeks after Caleb's death.

Jason agreed to meet Detective Brooks only after Rachel promised not to reveal his name to Vanessa or Mark.

They met at the police station that afternoon.

Jason looked younger than Rachel expected.

Twenty-four.

Nervous.

His knee bounced beneath the table.

"I should've talked sooner."

Detective Brooks sat across from him.

"Then talk now."

Jason swallowed.

"Mr. Carter dropped the truck off Wednesday evening."

"The day before his crash?"

"Yeah."

"He spoke to Dennis?"

"Yes."

"What did Dennis find?"

"Brake line was damaged."

"Damaged how?"

Jason glanced at Rachel.

"Cut. Not all the way through. More like somebody sliced it and bent it so it might leak when pressure increased."

Brooks nodded.

"What happened next?"

"Dennis told Mr. Carter not to drive it."

"Did Caleb leave the truck?"

"Yes."

Rachel leaned forward.

"My brother left his truck at the garage?"

Jason nodded.

"He got picked up."

"By who?"

"I don't know. Dark SUV."

Vanessa drove a gray SUV.

Rachel looked at Brooks.

The detective wrote something.

"What happened to the truck overnight?" Brooks asked.

Jason rubbed his palms against his jeans.

"That's the part."

He looked embarrassed.

"I was closing with Dennis. We left around eight. Next morning I came in at six."

"And?"

"The truck was gone."

Rachel stared.

"Gone?"

"Yes."

"Did you call Caleb?"

"Dennis did."

"What did Caleb say?"

"He said he had the truck."

Rachel felt confusion.

"He took it?"

"That's what we thought."

"But?"

Jason's eyes moved toward the table.

"When I checked the security system later, there was an entry at 4:12 a.m."

Brooks straightened.

"Who entered?"

"The camera didn't catch a face."

"Why not?"

"The side camera had been turned."

"By who?"

"I don't know."

"What did it show?"

"A person in a hood unlocking the gate."

Rachel asked, "Man or woman?"

"Couldn't tell."

"The truck left?"

"At 4:19."

"Then how did Caleb get it?"

Jason looked at her.

"I don't know."

Detective Brooks asked, "Where is the footage?"

Jason's face tightened.

"Deleted."

"By you?"

"No."

"By Dennis?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"Someone logged into the system remotely two days later."

Rachel looked at Brooks.

"Mark?"

Brooks ignored the question.

"Why didn't you tell police?"

Jason looked ashamed.

"Dennis wanted to."

"But?"

"His shop had already been in trouble over inspection paperwork. He was afraid police would blame him for letting the truck leave."

"So you said nothing."

Jason nodded.

Rachel stood abruptly.

"My brother died."

"I know."

"You knew his truck was stolen from a garage after someone cut the brakes."

"I know."

"And you said nothing."

"I was scared."

"So was Caleb."

Jason flinched.

Rachel turned away before anger made her say something worse.

Detective Brooks continued.

"How did Caleb receive the truck?"

"I don't know. But when Dennis called around 6:30 that morning, Mr. Carter sounded confused."

"Exact words."

Jason thought.

"He said, 'What do you mean it's gone? Vanessa said Mark brought it back.'"

Rachel turned slowly.

Mark.

Again.

Brooks's voice sharpened.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

"Did Dennis record the call?"

"No."

"Any phone log?"

"Probably."

Brooks stood.

"We'll need a formal statement and authorization to retrieve whatever records are available."

Jason nodded.

Rachel sat again.

One hour later, the prosecutor approved an arrest warrant for Mark Sloan on charges connected to tampering with evidence and financial fraud.

The homicide investigation remained open.

Vanessa was not arrested.

Not yet.

At the emergency custody hearing the next morning, Rachel sat behind Margaret while Vanessa entered with her attorney.

Vanessa wore a cream blouse.

Hair brushed.

No makeup.

She looked exhausted and fragile.

Deliberately so, Rachel thought.

For three hours, attorneys argued about Noah.

Vanessa's attorney described an overwhelmed mother grieving her husband.

Margaret's attorney described a newborn placed in danger.

Vanessa cried.

"I never intended to hurt my son."

The judge asked, "Why was he in the container?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I had been sorting clothes. He was crying. I put him down for a moment because I was afraid I would drop him."

Rachel could barely stay seated.

The judge continued.

"Why was the lid involved?"

"Margaret misunderstood what I was doing. She grabbed it. I grabbed back."

Margaret whispered.

"Liar."

Her attorney touched her wrist.

Vanessa looked toward Rachel.

"I know how terrible it looked when Rachel walked in."

The judge asked, "Did you push Mrs. Carter while she was holding the baby?"

Vanessa started crying again.

"I panicked because she was taking my son."

Rachel saw it then.

Vanessa believed this might work.

She believed if she softened her voice enough, if she looked broken enough, people would turn the morning into a misunderstanding.

Then the county attorney stood.

"Your Honor, we have an emergency supplemental exhibit."

Vanessa's attorney objected immediately.

The judge reviewed it privately.

Rachel couldn't see the page.

But she saw Vanessa's attorney's face after he read it.

His confidence vanished.

The judge looked at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, were you aware that law enforcement reopened the investigation into your husband's death?"

Vanessa went still.

Her attorney stood.

"We object to any implication of criminal conduct unrelated to custody."

The judge nodded.

"I'm not adjudicating criminal liability. I am considering current risk."

Vanessa looked at Rachel.

For the first time that morning, her mask slipped.

The judge continued.

"An audio recording provided to this court includes Mrs. Carter discussing prior intentional interference with her husband's vehicle."

The room changed.

Vanessa whispered to her lawyer.

He shook his head.

The judge ordered Noah to remain out of Vanessa's custody pending further proceedings.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Rachel exhaled for the first time in minutes.

Outside the courthouse, reporters were already waiting.

Somehow the story had leaked.

Rachel kept her head down.

Margaret carried Noah toward the car.

Then Vanessa came through the doors behind them.

"Rachel!"

Rachel turned.

Vanessa broke away from her attorney.

"You think you won?"

Rachel stepped between her and Noah.

"This isn't about winning."

"You took my son."

"You almost killed him."

Vanessa's face twisted.

"You don't know what killing someone looks like."

Everything around Rachel seemed to stop.

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Rachel stared at her.

"What did you just say?"

Vanessa's attorney grabbed her arm.

"Do not speak."

Rachel took one step forward.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa backed away.

The attorney pulled her toward a waiting car.

May you like

But Rachel had heard enough.

And so had the detective standing ten feet behind her.
