Chapter 6 - the video caleb never sent

The burner phone connected to Margaret's Wi-Fi at 8:12 the next morning.

Detective Brooks brought it herself.

Rachel thought that was a bad sign.

Police did not usually hand-deliver harmless family memories.

Noah slept in a portable bassinet near the sofa.

Margaret sat beside him.

Brooks placed the phone on the coffee table.

"The automatic file opened when we connected."

Rachel looked at the blank screen.

"What is it?"

"A video recorded by Caleb."

Margaret reached for Rachel's hand.

Brooks pressed play.

Caleb appeared on screen.

He was sitting in his truck.

Alive.

Wearing the green work jacket Rachel had buried him in.

The date stamp was the evening before his death.

He looked exhausted.

"Okay."

He rubbed his face.

"I've recorded this three times because I keep sounding insane."

Rachel almost smiled.

That was Caleb.

Even terrified, he worried about sounding ridiculous.

"If I'm showing this to you myself tomorrow, everyone can laugh at me."

His expression changed.

"If not, I need you to understand why I didn't go straight to police."

He lifted a sheet of paper.

"Dennis checked the truck. He says someone cut the rear brake line and then partially crimped it back so it would hold pressure for a while and fail later."

Margaret gasped.

Caleb continued.

"Mark had the truck for an hour on Tuesday."

He looked directly into the camera.

"Vanessa gave him the keys."

Rachel felt the room narrow.

"I asked her why. She said he needed to move lumber. Mark said she told him I had approved it."

Caleb swallowed.

"They both lied."

The video cut for a second.

Then returned.

Now Caleb was inside what looked like the storage unit.

He held up printed messages.

"I found these on the company tablet."

He read one.

"V: He has the Dennis appointment tomorrow."

He read Mark's reply.

"M: Then tomorrow can't happen."

Rachel froze.

Detective Brooks paused the video.

"That message was not in the printed folder."

"Why?"

"We don't know."

She resumed.

Caleb's face filled the screen again.

"I took screenshots because I thought Vanessa would delete them. Then she came into the office."

He looked toward something off camera.

"She knows I found something."

The next sentence came slowly.

"I don't think I can go home tonight."

Margaret began to cry.

Rachel stared without blinking.

Caleb continued.

"But she's seven months pregnant. Noah is there. If I'm wrong and I call police, I blow up my son's life before he's even born."

He leaned closer to the phone.

"Rach, this is the part you'll hate."

Rachel already did.

"I went home."

She closed her eyes.

Of course he did.

Caleb always believed he could calm people.

Fix things.

Make one more conversation work.

He had spent his life stepping between arguments.

The video continued.

"I put the recorder in the blue bag because Vanessa hates it and won't open the interior seam. Key is taped to it."

Rachel realized how carefully he had planned.

"If I need to leave quickly tomorrow, I'm going to Mom's."

He paused.

"If I don't show up, the final piece is at home."

Rachel opened her eyes.

Margaret stopped crying.

Caleb held up three fingers.

"Recorder. Phone. Final piece."

He looked directly at the camera.

"The final piece is something Vanessa doesn't know exists."

The video ended.

Rachel stared at the black screen.

Detective Brooks spoke first.

"We need to search Vanessa's house."

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

"This house?"

"No. The home she shared with Caleb."

Vanessa had remained in the small brick house three miles away after Caleb's death.

Margaret had been staying there until two days before the storage-bin incident.

The incident happened at Margaret's house because Vanessa had brought Noah there after a plumbing problem at her own home.

Rachel suddenly remembered.

Vanessa had insisted the leak was severe.

But Rachel never saw damage.

"What if there was no plumbing problem?" she asked.

Margaret looked at her.

"What?"

"Why did Vanessa come here?"

"She said the pipe behind the upstairs bathroom wall burst."

"Did you see it?"

"No."

"Did anyone?"

"She said a plumber came."

Detective Brooks made a note.

"Name?"

Margaret shook her head.

Rachel stood.

"What if she came here because she found the recorder?"

Brooks looked up.

"Explain."

"Caleb said the final piece was at their house. Maybe Vanessa was searching. Maybe she found evidence that he had hidden something in the diaper bag."

Margaret's face went pale.

"She brought the bag with her."

Rachel nodded.

"And this morning she was trying to take it."

Detective Brooks closed the laptop.

"I'll request the search authorization immediately."

It took ten hours.

Vanessa's attorney objected.

The house remained legally part of Caleb's estate but Vanessa was the resident, so every procedural step mattered.

At 7:40 p.m., police entered.

Rachel was not allowed inside.

She waited at Margaret's house with Noah.

At 10:17, Brooks called.

"We found signs someone recently searched the office."

Rachel gripped the phone.

"What signs?"

"Removed baseboards. Opened electrical plates. Cut fabric beneath furniture."

"Vanessa."

"We don't know."

"What else?"

"Your brother left us a clue on the video."

"What clue?"

"He kept looking to his right."

Rachel frowned.

"So?"

"We mapped where he was sitting when he recorded the final portion. His right side faced the nursery."

Rachel looked toward Noah.

Brooks continued.

"We searched the nursery."

Rachel's heart started racing.

"And?"

"We found something inside the wall."

"What?"

"A metal box behind the baseboard near the crib."

Rachel stood.

"Piece three?"

"Possibly."

"What's inside?"

There was a pause.

"A second phone."

Rachel stared at the floor.

Another phone.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

"What?"

"A memory card taped to the battery."

Rachel's mouth went dry.

Detective Brooks continued.

"The phone belonged to Vanessa."

Rachel frowned.

"How do you know?"

"Photographs. Messages. Account information."

"Why did Caleb have it?"

"We think it was her previous phone."

"Can you open it?"

"We're working on it."

Rachel heard voices behind Brooks.

Then the detective became quiet.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"The house wasn't empty when officers arrived."

Rachel stopped.

"Vanessa was there?"

"No."

"Then who?"

May you like

Brooks answered.

"Mark Sloan."
