Chapter 5 - unit 314

The storage facility sat behind a row of auto parts stores near the edge of town.

Rachel had driven past it hundreds of times.

She had never noticed it.

Three days after the recorder was found, Detective Brooks called.

The warrant had been approved.

Rachel and Margaret were permitted to be present for the opening because the lease was in Caleb's name and the contents might include personal property belonging to his estate.

They left Noah with a court-approved emergency caregiver for exactly ninety minutes.

Margaret hated every second of it.

Rachel did too.

Unit 314 was smaller than she expected.

A roll-up metal door.

Concrete floor.

No windows.

When the manager cut the facility lock and Detective Brooks used Caleb's brass key on a second padlock, Rachel felt as if they were opening a grave.

The door rolled upward.

Inside were four plastic tubs.

A metal toolbox.

A folding chair.

And their father's old black fireproof lockbox.

Margaret whispered Caleb's name.

Rachel stepped forward.

Detective Brooks stopped her.

"Photographs first."

Everything was documented.

Then the lockbox was opened.

Inside were financial statements.

Printed emails.

Copies of checks.

A small notebook.

And a sealed envelope with Rachel's name.

She stared at it.

Brooks handed it to her after photographing it.

Rachel opened the flap with shaking fingers.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

Rach,

If you're reading this without me standing there, then I ran out of time.

Don't blame yourself.

Don't blame Mom.

I kept thinking I could fix everything quietly because Vanessa is pregnant and I didn't want Noah to be born into a war.

That was a mistake.

The company money is only the beginning.

Mark is involved.

I think Vanessa is planning to make the missing money look like I stole it.

Dennis checked my truck today. He said the rear brake line has a fresh cut that someone tried to hide under road grime.

I told him not to touch anything until I could speak to an attorney.

Vanessa overheard part of the call.

I moved the paperwork here.

The second piece is in Dad's red toolbox.

The third is not here.

You will know where to look after you hear me.

I love you.

Tell Mom I'm sorry.

Tell Noah I wanted him more than anything in this world.

Caleb

Rachel read the final sentence three times.

Margaret could not.

She turned away after the first.

Detective Brooks quietly gave them a minute.

Rachel found the red toolbox beneath a plastic tub.

It had belonged to their father.

The paint was chipped.

One latch was bent.

Inside were old sockets, wrenches, a voltage meter, and beneath the removable tray, a black smartphone sealed inside a freezer bag.

Detective Brooks put on gloves.

"Burner phone?"

Rachel shook her head.

"I've never seen it."

Brooks removed it carefully.

The phone was dead.

A charging cable was taped to the back.

"That appears deliberate."

Margaret wiped her face.

"Is that piece two?"

Rachel looked at Caleb's letter.

"The key got us here. This phone tells us where piece three is."

Detective Brooks nodded.

The rest of the unit explained part of Caleb's fear.

The fake vendor receiving money from Carter Renovations was called Sloan Exterior Consulting.

Mark Sloan had no registered company by that name.

The checks totaled more than thirty thousand dollars.

Some carried Vanessa's electronic approval credentials.

Others appeared authorized by Caleb.

He had written across one copy:

NOT MY SIGNATURE.

Another folder contained screenshots of messages between Vanessa and Mark.

Most were financial.

Move 4,800 today.

C won't check until Friday.

Use the other invoice.

One message was different.

Vanessa:

He says he's taking everything to the accountant.

Mark:

Then stop him.

Vanessa:

I'm trying.

Mark:

Try harder.

Rachel stared at the page.

"That could mean anything."

Detective Brooks nodded.

"By itself."

"Do you think Mark killed him?"

"We think Mark needs to answer more questions."

Margaret sat on the folding chair.

"Vanessa knew."

Nobody answered.

At the bottom of the lockbox was a copy of a life insurance policy.

Caleb had changed the beneficiary two months before his death.

Vanessa had previously been the sole beneficiary.

Now the majority went into a trust for Noah.

A smaller portion went to Margaret to administer the trust with an independent attorney.

Vanessa received enough to pay off the remaining mortgage, but no direct access to Noah's trust.

Rachel understood immediately.

"She knew about this?"

"There's a signed acknowledgment from Caleb's insurance agent," Brooks said. "Not from Vanessa."

"Caleb didn't have to tell her."

"No."

Margaret looked sick.

"So she killed him for money."

"We do not know that."

Rachel looked at the message.

Then stop him.

Try harder.

She didn't need a detective to explain what it looked like.

The burner phone was delivered to the digital forensics unit.

That night, Vanessa called Rachel.

Rachel almost rejected it.

Then she remembered Brooks's instruction.

Preserve everything.

She answered.

"What?"

Vanessa breathed quietly on the other end.

"Where is Noah?"

"Safe."

"With your mother?"

"Safe."

"You can't keep him."

"The court order says otherwise."

"Temporary order."

"Then I guess we'll see."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"You always wanted this."

Rachel's hand tightened around the phone.

"Wanted what?"

"My baby."

"He's my nephew."

"You couldn't have your own, so you waited for mine."

Rachel went silent.

It was a cruel thing to say.

Vanessa knew exactly where to aim.

Rachel had once told her about wanting children someday.

That was all.

Vanessa interpreted the silence as victory.

"I know how this looks."

Rachel stared through the living room window.

"Do you?"

"I panicked."

"You put Noah in a bin."

"He was already in it."

"What?"

Vanessa exhaled.

"I was sorting clothes. I set him there for one second."

"With a lid?"

"The lid was beside it."

"You were pushing it down."

"Because your mother was pulling it and screaming."

Rachel almost couldn't believe the lie.

"I saw you."

"You saw two seconds."

"I saw enough."

"No, you saw what Margaret wanted you to see."

Rachel heard movement behind Vanessa.

A car door.

Traffic.

"Where are you?"

"None of your business."

Rachel said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

"Did the police give you Caleb's recorder?"

Rachel chose her words carefully.

"No."

"Did you hear it?"

"Why?"

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, "Because my husband had a habit of inventing enemies."

"You seem very worried about what he invented."

"I am worried about private conversations being twisted."

"Did you cut his brake line?"

Nothing.

Rachel's pulse jumped.

She had expected shouting.

Instead Vanessa whispered.

"You have no idea what Caleb did."

The call ended.

Rachel stared at the screen.

Five minutes later, Detective Brooks called.

"We recovered access to the phone."

Rachel sat up.

"Already?"

"It wasn't encrypted beyond the lock screen."

"What did you find?"

"A video."

Rachel stopped breathing.

"Of what?"

"We don't know yet."

"What do you mean?"

"The file name is strange. It was set to open automatically when the phone connected to a specific Wi-Fi network."

Rachel frowned.

"What network?"

May you like

Brooks paused.

"Your mother's house."
