Chapter 7 - The Photograph)

Claire stared at the photograph under the fluorescent light of the federal field office.

Daniel stood outside a roadside motel.

The picture was grainy.

He wore jeans, a dark jacket, and a baseball cap.

His face was turned toward the camera.

There was no question.

It was him.

Bell placed a calendar beside the image.

"The timestamp places this six weeks after the crash."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"I know."

"No. Daniel died."

Bell did not argue.

"I saw his body."

Claire's voice cracked.

"I was at the funeral."

"Claire."

"I identified him."

Bell leaned forward.

"Did you?"

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Memory arrived in pieces.

The crash had been severe.

The car left the road and struck a concrete barrier before catching fire.

The medical examiner recommended Claire not view the body.

Robert handled most arrangements.

Claire insisted.

They permitted her to see only the left hand and part of Daniel's face.

A wedding ring.

A familiar scar near the thumb.

The face badly injured.

She had believed because there was no reason not to believe.

"DNA?" Bell asked.

Claire whispered, "I don't know."

Bell slid a report across the table.

"The identification was based on dental comparison and personal effects."

"That's normal."

"It can be."

"But?"

"The dental records were submitted by a private practice."

Claire knew before he said it.

"Robert's dentist."

Bell nodded.

Claire stood and walked toward the window.

Below them, cars moved along the highway.

Somewhere inside the building Sophie slept on a couch with Max curled beside her.

"Are you telling me Daniel is alive?"

"I'm telling you this photograph appears to show Daniel alive six weeks after his documented death."

"Why didn't you have it before?"

"We didn't."

"Robert did."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"In the inside pocket of the coat he left in the sedan."

Claire turned.

"So he wanted you to find it?"

"Maybe."

"Or someone put it there."

"Also possible."

She hated the uncertainty.

For fourteen months everyone had given her certainty.

Daniel died.

The accident was tragic.

The trust was complicated.

Robert was helping.

Margaret was difficult but grieving.

Now every certainty had become a question.

Bell pushed a paper cup of coffee toward her.

She ignored it.

"What did Daniel mean about identities?"

"We've seen versions of this before."

Bell explained that dormant estates could become useful tools for financial crimes.

A dead beneficiary whose identity remained active in poorly monitored systems could be used to establish shell companies.

A minor's trust could provide funds.

A vulnerable elderly client's signature could move property.

But Daniel's files suggested something more organized.

Hart Fiduciary Services appeared to have supplied legitimate identities and clean financial histories to someone else.

"Someone who?" Claire asked.

"We don't know."

"Robert knows."

"Probably."

"And he's gone."

"For now."

Claire sat again.

"What about Margaret?"

"Her attorney is negotiating."

"Negotiating what?"

"Access to information in exchange for reduced exposure."

Claire laughed.

"She terrorized an eleven-year-old with a bowl of meat and stole her dog because she wanted a key."

Bell's expression hardened.

"Nobody is forgetting that."

Claire looked at the photograph again.

"Where is Robert?"

"We're checking transportation records."

"Passport?"

"His passports are in the safe."

"He had several."

"Yes."

"How many people have several passports?"

"People who travel frequently."

"And criminals."

"Sometimes."

Claire stared at him.

"You still talk like you haven't decided what Robert is."

Bell folded his hands.

"I decided a long time ago that deciding too early is how investigators miss the person behind the person."

Daniel's message returned to her.

Robert will look like the center of everything.

He isn't.

A knock sounded.

An analyst entered.

"We recovered audio from the damaged section."

Bell stood.

Claire followed.

They returned to the forensic room.

The video resumed several seconds before the corruption.

Daniel's face appeared.

"And whatever they tell Claire about my accident, she needs to understand something."

Static.

Then Daniel again.

"I've made arrangements."

More static.

"If Robert thinks I'm dead, let him."

Claire gripped the table.

Bell stopped the video.

No one spoke.

Claire finally whispered.

"He planned it."

"Maybe."

"He planned to disappear."

"That's what it sounds like."

"Without telling me."

Bell looked at her.

"Daniel was under extreme pressure."

"He left his daughter."

"I know."

"He let us bury him."

"I know."

Claire turned away.

She wanted him alive.

She hated him for possibly being alive.

Both emotions existed at once.

An analyst opened another file from the microSD card.

A spreadsheet appeared.

Rows of names.

Dates.

Cities.

Some highlighted red.

One was Sophie's.

Beside it:

STATUS: PENDING

AUTHORITY: RH

TRANSFER WINDOW: JUNE 19

Claire stared.

Daniel died June 12.

One week before whatever transfer had been planned.

"What does transfer mean?"

Bell's face had become grim.

"We don't know."

"Don't give me that answer."

"I don't know."

"Could they have planned to take Sophie?"

"It's possible."

Claire felt nauseated.

The analyst scrolled.

Another column appeared.

SPONSOR CODE.

Sophie's entry contained a single word.

ORION.

Bell and Claire looked at each other.

Orion was not just the collar.

It was a case designation.

A file.

A transaction.

Something larger.

Then the analyst stopped scrolling.

Near the bottom was another name.

May you like

CLAIRE BENSON.

STATUS: ACTIVE.
