Chapter 6 - The Man Who Ran)

Robert had not been arrested.
Not yet.
The warrant authorized the search.
It did not authorize Bell to hold him indefinitely.
While agents worked inside the office and Claire drove to retrieve Max, Robert had remained under observation.
Then Margaret complained of chest pain.
An ambulance was called.
For several minutes, every person in the front part of the house focused on her.
Robert walked out through the backyard.
A neighbor's security camera recorded him entering a dark sedan parked two streets away.
The vehicle belonged to an employee of Hart Fiduciary Services.
By the time agents realized he was gone, forty minutes had passed.
"Where would he go?" Bell asked.
Claire sat in his vehicle outside Pinecrest Storage.
Sophie and Max had been taken to a secure waiting area inside the facility office with another agent.
Claire shook her head.
"Robert has a lake cabin."
"Address?"
"I'll give it to you."
"Anywhere else?"
"The company office."
"Already covered."
"He has friends everywhere."
"Names?"
Claire began listing them.
Accountants.
Attorneys.
Former clients.
A retired judge.
A state senator Daniel had once disliked.
Bell wrote everything down.
Then Claire remembered something.
"The house."
Bell looked up.
"What about it?"
"Robert wouldn't leave without something."
"We searched his office."
"Not the house."
"We have teams there."
"No. I mean his real hiding place."
Bell waited.
Claire thought about the years she had spent visiting Margaret and Robert.
The house was immaculate.
Robert's office was private, but obvious.
If Daniel had learned to hide things from him, perhaps Robert had learned to hide things from everyone.
"Daniel once told me his father didn't trust banks."
Bell's eyes narrowed.
"When?"
"Years ago. We were talking about safes."
"Did he say Robert had one?"
Claire remembered laughing during the conversation.
Daniel had been replacing a closet shelf.
He told Claire not to buy an expensive safe because any thief could find one in a bedroom.
She asked where he would hide one.
Daniel answered:
Somewhere boring.
"Robert built the pantry himself," Claire said.
Bell started the engine.
They returned to the Hart house after dark.
Margaret was no longer pretending to have chest pain.
She sat in the dining room with an attorney.
The attorney stood when Bell entered.
"My client will not answer additional questions."
Bell nodded.
"She doesn't need to."
Claire walked toward the kitchen.
Margaret noticed.
"Where are you going?"
Claire ignored her.
The pantry was narrow.
Shelves covered three walls.
Canned goods.
Pasta.
Cleaning supplies.
Robert had built the cabinetry twenty years earlier.
Claire ran her hand along the wooden panels.
Bell watched.
"What are we looking for?"
"Something boring."
Claire removed boxes from the bottom shelf.
Behind them was a plain wooden panel.
No handle.
No lock.
She pressed it.
Nothing.
Bell knelt.
His flashlight moved along the edges.
"There."
A tiny circular indentation.
The panel opened when they pressed simultaneously near the bottom.
Behind it was a steel safe.
Margaret appeared in the doorway.
For the first time since Bell arrived, she screamed.
"Get out of there!"
Bell looked over his shoulder.
The attorney grabbed Margaret's arm.
"Do not say anything."
Too late.
Bell smiled without humor.
"Thank you for confirming relevance."
The safe required a warrant extension.
It arrived ninety minutes later.
Inside they found cash.
Passports.
A handgun lawfully registered to Robert.
Several phones.
And Max's red collar.
Sophie had been kept outside the room.
Claire picked up the collar with gloved hands.
Three small silver stars were stamped into the leather.
Orion.
Bell examined the metal tag.
It twisted open.
Inside was a small silver key.
The fake.
But Sophie's brass key had already opened Daniel's storage unit.
So why did Daniel's letter say find Orion?
Bell inspected the stars.
One was slightly raised.
He pressed it.
A thin compartment opened inside the leather seam.
Something tiny slid into his palm.
A microSD card.
Claire stared.
Margaret sat in the dining room thirty feet away.
Had she known?
Bell looked toward her.
Her face answered.
Yes.
The forensic technician inserted the card into an isolated reader.
Folders appeared.
Audio.
Photographs.
Scanned documents.
And one video file.
The date was two days before Daniel's death.
Bell pressed play.
Daniel appeared on screen.
He was sitting inside his car.
Tired.
Unshaven.
Alive.
Claire stopped breathing.
"If this recording is being watched," Daniel said, "I failed to get the full ledger out."
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
"My father is involved. My mother knows more than she admits. But neither of them started this."
Bell leaned closer to the screen.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"The money is only the surface. The accounts are being used to move identities."
Bell paused the recording.
"What does that mean?"
Claire barely heard him.
She was staring at her husband.
Bell resumed.
"Children who inherited money. Elderly clients without close relatives. Dead beneficiaries whose paperwork stays active. Their names are being used to create accounts, companies, property records, and travel documents."
Claire looked toward Sophie.
Daniel's expression tightened on screen.
"I found one name scheduled for conversion."
He lifted a sheet of paper.
The camera focused.
SOPHIE BENSON.
Claire stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
Daniel continued.
"If anything happens to me, do not let Robert become trustee. Do not let Margaret take Sophie across state lines. And whatever they tell Claire about my accident..."
The video stopped.
Bell frowned.
The file had been damaged.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Claire stared at the black screen.
"What was he going to say?"
Bell said nothing.
A phone rang.
One of the evidence technicians handed Bell a burner recovered from Robert's safe.
It was ringing.
Unknown number.
Bell activated speaker mode.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice came through.
"Robert?"
Bell remained silent.
"Robert, answer me."
Bell looked at Claire.
The caller continued.
"The girl found Orion, didn't she?"
Claire felt the room contract around her.
Bell reached for the tracing equipment.
The caller seemed to hear something.
His tone changed.
"You're not Robert."
The line disconnected.
Three seconds later, Bell's own phone rang.
An agent had located Robert's sedan.
It was abandoned near a bus station.
On the passenger seat was Robert's wallet.
His phone.
And one printed photograph.
May you like
Daniel.
Taken after his funeral.
