Chapter 15 - The Man at the Door)

Three weeks passed.
Margaret accepted a cooperation agreement.
Robert did the same.
Neither agreement erased what they had done.
Claire made that clear.
She did not visit them.
Sophie did not speak to them.
The protective order remained.
Hart Fiduciary Services was placed under federal receivership.
Victims from several states began receiving notices.
Accounts were frozen.
Properties seized.
Officials resigned.
Judge Malcolm Reeves publicly denied wrongdoing three hours before federal agents searched two of his properties.
Northbridge appeared on evening news broadcasts.
Reporters called it one of the most complicated fiduciary fraud investigations in years.
None of them knew the part Claire cared about.
Daniel.
Thomas Vale.
The unidentified people still above them.
For the first time since Daniel's supposed death, Claire controlled Sophie's trust.
For the first time in months, Max slept beside Sophie's bed.
For the first time since moving into Margaret's home, Claire signed a lease on a place chosen entirely by herself.
A small house with a fenced yard.
Nothing luxurious.
Nothing connected to the Hart family.
Sophie picked the room facing the backyard.
"Max needs to see squirrels."
Claire smiled.
"Obviously."
It almost felt like an ending.
That frightened her.
Real endings did not arrive while questions remained.
On Friday evening, Sophie unpacked the final box from Daniel's old belongings.
Claire had nearly donated most of them after the funeral.
Now every object felt like evidence.
Sweaters.
Books.
A coffee mug.
Running shoes.
A cheap flashlight.
An old astronomy guide Daniel used when Sophie became interested in stars.
Sophie opened it.
Something fell out.
A photograph.
Three stars had been drawn on the back.
Orion.
Claire sat beside her.
The photograph showed Daniel and Sophie at a county fair.
Sophie was seven.
Daniel held a stuffed bear.
Claire had taken the picture.
Below the three stars Daniel had written:
MEMORY IS SAFER THAN PAPER.
Sophie stared.
"That's another clue."
Claire's heart accelerated.
"To what?"
"I don't know."
Sophie turned the photograph over again.
Then her expression changed.
"Mom."
"What?"
"The bear."
Claire looked at the photograph.
The stuffed bear Daniel held was large, brown, with a red ribbon.
"I had that."
"Do you still?"
Sophie ran toward her closet.
Boxes opened.
Closet doors slammed.
Then she returned.
"No."
Claire remembered.
After Daniel died, Margaret helped sort Sophie's toys.
Many were donated.
"Grandma took a donation box somewhere."
Sophie became pale.
"Grandma knew."
Claire immediately called Bell.
He answered on the second ring.
"We found another Orion clue."
"Where?"
She explained.
Bell became quiet.
"Do not call Margaret yourself."
"I wasn't planning to."
"I'm sending someone."
"Bell."
"Yes?"
"Ask Margaret where the stuffed bear went."
He called back eleven minutes later.
Margaret remembered.
A charity shop.
Goodwill donation center outside Arlington.
Records showed the donations had been processed more than a year earlier.
Most were long gone.
But the bear had not been sold.
A volunteer remembered it because something inside made a noise when moved.
It had been placed in a back storage room after the seam tore.
Bell found it the following morning.
Inside the stuffing was a voice recorder.
Claire, Sophie, and Bell listened together.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
"Sophie, if you're the one who found this, you're better at Orion than I ever was."
Sophie smiled through tears.
Daniel continued.
"If Mom is with you, tell her I'm sorry."
Claire looked away.
"I know sorry isn't enough."
The recording paused.
"I'm going to tell you something nobody else knows."
Bell leaned forward.
"The man called Thomas Vale is not the person who started Northbridge."
Claire felt her pulse quicken.
"Neither is Judge Reeves."
Another pause.
"The person who controls it has been close to the investigation from the beginning."
Bell became completely still.
Claire looked at him.
Daniel continued.
"If Bell is there, listen carefully."
Sophie reached for Claire's hand.
"Marcus, you once asked me why I chose you."
Bell stared at the recorder.
"I chose you because I knew you weren't part of them."
Claire breathed again.
Bell did not.
Daniel continued.
"But someone beside you was."
Static interrupted the recording.
Then Daniel said:
"Look at the photograph from the motel."
Claire froze.
The photograph Robert had carried.
Daniel outside the roadside motel.
Bell pulled the digital copy onto his laptop.
They enlarged it.
Daniel stood near the entrance.
Cars behind him.
A vending machine.
A window.
Nothing.
Sophie leaned closer.
"There's someone in the glass."
Claire stared at the motel window.
A reflection.
Bell enlarged it.
Pixels blurred.
He enhanced contrast.
A figure slowly appeared.
A man wearing a dark professional coat.
Claire's stomach tightened.
Bell zoomed closer.
The face became clearer.
Sophie whispered.
"I know him."
Claire looked at her.
"From where?"
Sophie pointed toward the screen.
"He came to Grandpa's house."
"When?"
"The day before Dad died."
Claire stared at the reflected man.
Bell said nothing.
"Who is he?" Claire asked.
Bell's face had gone pale.
"His name is Agent Raymond Cole."
"Federal?"
"Yes."
"Your task force?"
Bell nodded.
Claire felt the room become smaller.
Daniel's recording continued behind them.
"If Claire ever sees Cole, she needs to leave before he knows she recognizes him."
The doorbell rang.
Nobody moved.
Max lifted his head.
A low growl came from his throat.
Claire looked toward the front window.
A dark government sedan stood at the curb.
Bell immediately closed the laptop.
"Take Sophie upstairs."
"Who is it?"
"I don't know."
The bell rang again.
Then someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Bell moved toward the door without opening it.
"Who is it?"
A man's voice answered.
"Federal agent. I'm looking for Claire Benson."
Bell's hand moved beneath his coat.
Claire took Sophie's hand.
Max stood between them and the hallway.
Bell looked through the peephole.
His face changed.
Claire whispered.
"Is it Cole?"
Bell slowly stepped away from the door.
"No."
"Then who?"
Before he could answer, Claire's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One new message.
She opened it.
A photograph appeared.
Taken seconds earlier.
It showed Claire standing inside the house beside Sophie.
Someone was watching them through the window.
Below the image were seven words.
DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. IT'S DANIEL.
Claire stopped breathing.
The knocking came again.
Then the man outside spoke.
"Claire?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
The voice was older.
Rougher.
But she knew it.
She had heard it beside her in bed for thirteen years.
She had heard it reading stories to Sophie.
She had heard it on the recording hidden inside Orion.
"Claire, please."
Sophie looked at her mother.
"Mom?"
Claire could not move.
Bell raised one hand.
"Nobody opens that door."
The man outside spoke again.
This time his voice cracked.
"Sophie is in danger."
Claire stared at the door separating her from the husband she had buried fourteen months earlier.
Then Daniel said the sentence that made Bell turn white.
"Marcus, Cole isn't the mole."
Silence.
Bell stepped closer to the door.
Daniel continued from the other side.
"The mole is standing inside the house."
Claire slowly turned.
Bell turned too.
May you like
Behind them, at the end of the hallway, a floorboard creaked.
Someone was already inside.
