The Moment Lily Said Dad / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Door Left Open)

Three weeks later, Mercer House no longer belonged to silence.

The first thing Ethan did was remove every hidden camera he could find.

The second was replace every member of the private security team.

The third was cancel his wedding.

Victoria moved out without argument.

For two days, tabloids speculated.

Ethan refused interviews.

Victoria surprised everyone by doing the same.

Then she walked into a federal building with Samuel Crowe and handed investigators six years of records.

Emails.

Financial transfers.

Northstar contacts.

Audio files.

The evidence didn't make her innocent.

Victoria knew that.

Neither did Elena forgive her.

Forgiveness wasn't a switch.

Sometimes it wasn't even necessary.

Accountability came first.

Daniel surrendered forty-eight hours after the lake.

Not because he became honorable.

Because Nathan released enough documentation to leave him nowhere safe to run.

Daniel's relationship to Mateo Ruiz was confirmed.

Half-brothers.

Same father.

Different mothers.

Daniel had indeed stood to inherit the Ruiz position if Lily's rights were rejected.

He signed a temporary legal waiver preventing any transfer until a federal court reviewed the trust.

It was the first useful thing Elena believed he had ever done.

Gerald Knox resigned from three corporate boards.

Evelyn Shaw entered negotiations with investigators.

Thomas stepped down as chairman of Mercer Holdings while an independent review examined Northstar-linked transactions.

Margaret moved into a guest cottage on the Mercer property.

Not the mansion.

She said she'd had enough of hidden rooms.

Nathan disappeared.

Again.

That hurt Ethan differently this time.

Nathan left voluntarily after Charles's warning appeared on the boathouse screen.

He left one note.

I won't ask you to trust me.

But don't assume Dad is telling the truth.

Ethan read the sentence every night.

He still didn't know where Charles was.

He didn't know whether Charles was a prisoner, a participant or something in between.

The Custodian remained unidentified.

Federal investigators insisted Northstar's financial structure was collapsing.

Samuel disagreed.

"Organizations like that rarely collapse."

"What happens?"

"They change names."

But for the first time in weeks, Elena wanted one ordinary day.

She and Lily stayed at Mercer House temporarily while their apartment underwent a security upgrade.

Elena resisted.

Lily convinced her.

"It has a library."

"You hate reading."

"It has secret stairs."

"That argument is worse."

"And Dad lives there."

Elena looked at her.

Lily smiled.

"That argument worked."

So they stayed.

Not in Elena's old room.

She refused.

Ethan gave them two rooms overlooking the garden.

He did not ask Elena to resume what they'd lost seven years earlier.

That mattered.

He didn't treat Lily as a shortcut back to Elena.

He learned.

Slowly.

He discovered Lily hated tomatoes.

Loved pancakes.

Pretended not to be afraid of thunderstorms.

Needed the hallway light left on.

Collected smooth rocks.

Could never remember where she put her shoes.

On Saturday morning, Ethan burned eggs.

Lily stared at the pan.

"Are dads supposed to cook?"

"Some can."

"Can you?"

"No."

"Okay."

She ate cereal.

Elena laughed from the doorway.

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time, laughter between them didn't immediately lead to grief.

"Coffee?"

he asked.

"Please."

They stood beside each other in the kitchen.

Not lovers.

Not strangers.

Something unfinished.

Elena looked at him.

"You know I can't promise anything."

"I know."

"Seven years happened."

"I know."

"I became someone else."

"So did I."

"And Lily comes first."

"Always."

Elena studied him.

"I believe you."

Those three words meant more than Ethan expected.

Later that afternoon, they visited the lake.

Lily threw stones into the water.

Margaret sat on the dock.

Ethan remained beside Elena.

"No cameras," he said.

"That you know of."

"Ruined my dramatic moment."

"Sorry."

He smiled.

Elena looked across the lake.

"Do you think Charles is alive?"

"Yes."

"Do you think Nathan lied?"

"I think everyone in my family learned to lie before learning to explain."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

Lily ran toward them.

"Mom."

She held an old brass key.

Elena frowned.

"Where did you find that?"

"In the rocks."

Ethan took it.

The key looked almost identical to the one that opened Room 17.

But the number engraved on this one was different.

18.

Elena and Ethan looked at each other.

"There is no Room 18," Ethan said.

Lily shrugged.

"Maybe there is."

That evening, Ethan searched the architectural plans.

Nothing.

Basement archives ended at 17.

Original servant rooms ended at 14.

Wine storage ended at 9.

No Room 18 existed anywhere.

Samuel arrived after dinner.

He examined the key.

His face changed.

"Where did you find this?"

"Lily did."

Samuel looked toward the child.

Then quietly shut the study door.

"Charles once mentioned eighteen."

Ethan stared.

"When?"

"Before he disappeared."

"What did he say?"

Samuel hesitated.

"That Northstar had seventeen physical archives."

Elena pointed toward the key.

"Then what's eighteen?"

Samuel looked at her.

"He called it the room that wasn't allowed to exist."

Lily appeared in the doorway.

All three adults stopped.

"What?"

Elena asked.

Lily held something.

An old photograph.

"I found this behind the bookshelf."

Ethan took it.

The photograph showed six adults standing outside Mercer House almost thirty years earlier.

Charles.

Margaret.

Mateo Ruiz.

Evelyn Shaw's father.

Gerald Knox's father.

And one unfamiliar woman.

On the back was written:

THE FIRST SIX.

Ethan stared at Samuel.

"Who's the woman?"

Samuel looked genuinely frightened.

"I've never seen her."

Elena examined the photograph.

The woman's hand rested on Mateo's shoulder.

She was young.

Dark-haired.

Smiling.

A silver symbol hung around her neck.

The symbol of the Custodian.

Lily pointed.

"She looks like Grandma Rosa."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"My grandma."

Elena took the photograph closer to the lamp.

Her mother had always worn her hair differently.

Older photographs were rare.

But the eyes...

The chin...

The tiny birthmark beneath the left ear...

"No."

Elena's hands began shaking.

Samuel whispered, "Elena?"

"My mother died three years ago."

Ethan looked at the photograph.

"Are you sure this is her?"

Elena turned it over again.

There was another line beneath THE FIRST SIX.

Faded.

Almost invisible.

Ethan angled the photograph beneath the light.

The writing became readable.

ROSA RUIZ - FIRST CUSTODIAN.

Elena sat down.

Her entire childhood rearranged itself in one breath.

Her mother had known Northstar.

Her mother had raised Elena while pretending Mateo's past was a mystery.

Her mother had received Elena's belongings after Daniel forced her into hiding.

Her mother had kept the music box.

The flash drive.

The key.

Everything.

Lily whispered, "Mom?"

Elena pulled her close.

Samuel looked toward the dark window.

"We need to reconsider everything."

Ethan nodded.

"If Rosa was the original Custodian, who has the title now?"

Nobody answered.

Then the grandfather clock in the hallway chimed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

A sound came from inside the study wall.

Click.

Elena turned.

The family bookshelf moved forward by itself.

Behind it was a steel door.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a keyhole.

Ethan stared at the brass key in Lily's hand.

18.

Lily whispered, "I guess we found the room."

Ethan took the key.

Before he could insert it, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman's voice came through.

Old.

Soft.

Familiar to Elena in a way that made the blood drain from her face.

"Don't open that door."

Elena stopped breathing.

Her lips moved before sound came.

"Mom?"

Silence.

Then the voice returned.

"I told Charles this would happen if Lily came home."

Elena grabbed the phone.

"My mother is dead."

The woman laughed quietly.

"That's what I needed everyone to believe."

Lily looked up at Elena.

Ethan stared at the sealed door.

Samuel backed away.

The woman continued.

"If you open Room 18 tonight, Ethan will learn why Elena was really chosen seven years ago."

Elena's face changed.

"Chosen?"

"And Lily will learn why Daniel was never the person she needed to fear."

Ethan's hand tightened around the key.

"Who are you?"

The voice ignored him.

"Elena, take Lily and leave Mercer House."

"Why?"

"Because Charles is coming."

Elena looked at Ethan.

The study lights flickered.

Then the woman whispered one final sentence.

"And this time, he's bringing the child he never told Ethan about."

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Outside, beyond the gates of Mercer House, headlights appeared in the darkness.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then a third.

Lily reached for Ethan's hand.

"Is that Grandpa?"

Ethan stared through the window.

He didn't answer.

Behind him, the lock to Room 18 clicked open by itself.

And from somewhere on the other side of the steel door came the unmistakable sound of someone knocking.

Three times.
