The Moment Lily Said Dad / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Came Back)

Three hours before the confrontation, Elena Ruiz sat inside an aging sedan across the street from Mercer House with both hands locked around the steering wheel.

She had driven nearly four hundred miles.

She had almost turned around seventeen times.

Lily slept in the passenger seat beneath a soft gray blanket.

Her pink backpack rested against her feet.

Mercer House stood beyond iron gates and tall oak trees, glowing beneath the evening sky exactly as Elena remembered it.

It wasn't technically a mansion.

Ethan had always hated that word.

"It's just an old house my grandfather made too big," he'd once told her.

But with three stories, twelve bedrooms, a ballroom nobody used, a library with rolling ladders and a staircase wide enough for ten people to walk side by side, nobody had ever believed him.

Elena watched lights move behind the windows.

She wondered which room belonged to Ethan now.

She wondered whether Victoria slept in Elena's old room.

That thought hurt more than she expected.

Lily stirred.

"Mom?"

Elena released the steering wheel.

"I'm here."

Lily rubbed her eyes.

"Is that his house?"

Elena looked toward Mercer House.

"Yes."

"My dad's?"

Elena's throat tightened.

"Yes."

Lily stared through the windshield.

"It's huge."

Despite everything, Elena laughed softly.

"That was my first reaction too."

"Is he nice?"

The question destroyed the smile.

Elena didn't know how to answer.

The Ethan she remembered had been kind.

Too trusting.

Impossibly stubborn.

Protective of people he loved.

He had also been a twenty-nine-year-old man who woke one morning believing Elena had abandoned him.

By the time he learned she was gone, Elena had been hundreds of miles away under a different last name.

He had never called.

Because every number she'd given him had been disconnected.

Every email had bounced.

Every mutual friend had been told she didn't want to see him.

Elena hadn't discovered that part until two weeks earlier.

That discovery had brought her here.

"I think he used to be," she told Lily.

"Used to?"

"He might still be."

Lily looked down.

"And if he doesn't want me?"

Elena turned immediately.

"Lily."

Her daughter kept staring at her hands.

"What if he already has another family?"

Elena leaned over the center console.

"Ethan not knowing you exist is very different from Ethan not wanting you."

"But what if he doesn't believe you?"

Elena looked toward the sealed envelope on the back seat.

"He'll believe his father."

That was what she hoped.

Two weeks earlier, Elena had received a package without a return address.

Inside had been an old photograph, a brass key and a letter from a lawyer named Samuel Crowe.

The letter contained only nine sentences.

Mr. Mercer left instructions that this package be delivered when specific conditions were met.

Those conditions have now been met.

Return to Mercer House.

Bring your daughter.

Trust nobody living inside the house until Ethan hears the truth directly from you.

The key opens something that was hidden for you.

Do not allow Victoria Hale to see the envelope.

Elena had read the letter twenty times.

The final line still terrified her.

If Victoria already knows Lily exists, you may have less time than you think.

Elena looked at the house again.

Victoria Hale.

The woman who had once been Elena's friend.

The woman who was now Ethan's fiancée.

Elena hadn't planned to confront Victoria.

She had intended to speak to Ethan privately.

But when she reached the gate, Ethan's car was gone.

Victoria answered the intercom.

For nearly thirty seconds, neither woman said anything.

Then Victoria whispered Elena's name.

Not with surprise.

With dread.

The gates opened.

That should have warned Elena.

Now, sitting in the car, Elena considered leaving before walking inside.

Then Lily pointed toward an upstairs window.

"Mom."

A curtain moved.

Someone stood there.

Elena couldn't see a face.

Only a silhouette.

Watching them.

Then it disappeared.

Elena reached for her phone.

There was no signal.

"That's strange."

"What?"

"Nothing."

She forced a smile.

"Stay close to me."

They stepped out of the car.

Elena retrieved the suitcase.

Lily took her backpack.

When they reached the front door, it opened before Elena touched the bell.

Victoria stood there.

Blonde.

Beautiful.

Older, but almost unchanged.

White dress.

Bare feet.

Wineglass in one hand.

"You shouldn't have come."

Elena stared at her.

"You knew I would."

Victoria's fingers tightened around the glass.

"Leave."

"I need to speak with Ethan."

"No."

"It's about Lily."

For the first time, Victoria looked at the girl.

Every trace of color vanished from her face.

Lily moved closer to Elena.

Victoria's gaze slowly returned to Elena.

"Where did you get her?"

Elena felt cold.

"What kind of question is that?"

Victoria looked past them toward the road.

"Did anyone follow you?"

Elena's suspicion sharpened.

"Why?"

Victoria seized Elena's wrist and pulled her into the house.

"Because if you received the envelope, we're already too late."

The door slammed shut.

And on a console table beside the staircase, Ethan's childhood family photograph stood in a silver frame.

Seven-year-old Lily looked at it.

Then at Elena.

"Mom."

Elena followed her gaze.

In the photograph, Ethan was nine years old.

And except for the darker hair, he had Lily's exact face.

Victoria saw them looking.

Her fear transformed into anger.

She crossed the room, opened a closet and removed a wooden baseball bat.

"Both of you are leaving."

Elena stared at her.

"Victoria..."

"Now."

"What are you afraid of?"

May you like

Victoria tightened both hands around the bat.

"You have no idea what you brought back into this house."
