Chapter 11 - Return to Mercer House)

They returned the following evening.
Not with Lily.
Aaron moved Lily to a safe location with two federal agents Samuel trusted.
Elena hated leaving her.
But bringing her into Mercer House felt worse.
Before Elena left, Lily hugged Ethan.
"Come back."
Ethan held her tightly.
"I will."
"Promise?"
The word struck him.
His family had built generations on promises nobody kept.
So he didn't promise what he couldn't control.
"I will do everything I can."
Lily considered that.
"Okay."
Then she whispered, "Dad?"
Ethan's eyes filled.
"Yeah?"
"I think you're learning."
He smiled.
"So are you."
At Mercer House, Daniel had transformed the ballroom into a conference room.
Five seats formed a half-circle.
Only three people occupied them.
Daniel sat in the center.
Beside him sat Evelyn Shaw, head of a banking family.
Across from her sat Gerald Knox, whose logistics empire stretched across North America.
The fourth chair belonged to Mercer.
The fifth to Ruiz.
Margaret entered first.
Daniel smiled.
"The dead continue arriving."
Ethan followed.
Thomas.
Elena.
Victoria.
Samuel.
Daniel's smile disappeared when he saw the lawyer.
"You survived."
Samuel sat.
"Disappointing, isn't it?"
Elena looked around.
"Where's the archive?"
Daniel tapped the table.
"Business first."
Ethan remained standing.
"No."
Daniel looked amused.
"You don't understand how this works."
"I understand enough."
He placed the flash drive on the table.
Daniel's eyes moved toward it.
Ethan noticed.
"The archive first."
Daniel leaned back.
"You think that drive contains access."
"It does."
"Partly."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel nodded toward Victoria.
"Ask her."
Victoria didn't react.
Elena turned.
Victoria stared at the flash drive.
"There's a second key."
Ethan laughed without humor.
"Of course there is."
"Daniel has it."
Daniel reached into his pocket.
A silver device appeared.
"Two founders designed the emergency system. Mercer and Ruiz. Charles held one key. Mateo held the other."
Elena frowned.
"Why do you have Mateo's?"
Daniel smiled.
"Because your father gave it to me."
"No."
"Your father trusted me once."
"Everyone seems to have made that mistake."
Daniel's smile faded.
He inserted his device into a laptop.
"Insert yours."
Elena didn't move.
Gerald Knox spoke for the first time.
"We are not here to relive family trauma."
Ethan looked at him.
"My father may have been murdered."
Gerald shrugged.
"Then call the police."
Thomas almost laughed.
"Half the documents in this room could imprison you."
Gerald's expression sharpened.
Daniel raised a hand.
"Enough."
Elena inserted the flash drive.
The laptop requested biometric confirmation.
GUARDIAN OF RUIZ BENEFICIARY.
Elena placed her finger on the reader.
Accepted.
Then another prompt appeared.
MERCER HEIR CONFIRMATION.
Ethan placed his finger.
Accepted.
The ballroom lights dimmed.
A hidden projector activated.
A video appeared on the wall.
Charles Mercer.
Alive.
Older.
Recorded six years earlier.
Ethan gripped the table.
His father looked directly into the camera.
"If you're seeing this, Daniel found a way back."
Daniel's face changed.
Charles continued.
"And if Lily Ruiz is present in the system, then Mateo's contingency succeeded."
Elena stared.
Her father had planned something involving a granddaughter he never knew.
Charles looked tired.
"We created Northstar to protect our families. Instead, we built a machine that rewarded fear."
Evelyn Shaw shifted.
Gerald looked angry.
Charles continued.
"Daniel believes information creates power. He is correct. But power without accountability becomes ownership."
Daniel reached toward the laptop.
Samuel stopped him.
"Let it play."
Charles leaned toward the camera.
"Ethan, I owe you more apologies than this recording can hold."
Ethan looked away.
"I separated you from Elena. I believed a forged investigation. When I learned the truth, I tried to reverse what I'd done."
Elena wiped tears from her face.
"Daniel had already taken control of the operation."
Charles paused.
"Then I discovered something worse."
Everyone waited.
"Daniel was never the person above us."
Daniel stood.
"Turn it off."
Victoria blocked him.
Charles continued.
"Northstar has had a hidden sixth member since the beginning."
Margaret went pale.
"There are only five families."
Charles shook his head on screen as if answering her across time.
"Five visible families."
Daniel grabbed the laptop.
Ethan seized his wrist.
"Sit down."
Daniel whispered, "You don't know what you're opening."
Charles's final words filled the ballroom.
May you like
"The sixth member is the reason Nathan disappeared."
Then the screen went black.
