Chapter 9 - The Final Hearing
Six months later, Elena and Preston sat on opposite sides of a family courtroom.
Their divorce had become unavoidable, but Elena did not seek revenge.
She wanted safety, stability and honesty.
The judge reviewed the hospital findings, their financial records and Preston’s progress in counseling.
Preston did not fight Elena’s request for primary custody.
His attorney had advised him to challenge it, but Preston refused.
“Elena protected our child when I failed to protect either of them,” he told the court. “She should make the major decisions.”
Elena looked at him for the first time that day.
His statement did not erase the past, but it showed he had finally stopped defending the indefensible.
The judge granted Elena primary custody. Preston would receive supervised visits until he completed all required treatment and demonstrated consistent responsibility.
Their home was awarded to Elena so Samuel would not be displaced.
After the hearing, Preston approached her in the corridor.
“I signed the remaining documents,” he said.
“Thank you.”
He looked at Samuel sleeping in Elena’s arms.
“May I say goodbye?”
Elena allowed him to step closer.
Preston did not touch the baby without permission.
“I’m sorry, Samuel,” he whispered. “Your mother saved you. Never forget how strong she is.”
Elena felt tears rise but did not let them change her decision.
Preston looked at her.
“I used to think losing my career would be the worst consequence.”
“It wasn’t,” Elena said.
“No.”
He glanced at the divorce papers in her hand.
“Losing your trust was.”
Elena walked away with Samuel.
Outside, Mara waited beside the car.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
Elena looked back at the courthouse doors.
For months, she had imagined feeling victorious when the marriage officially ended.
Instead, she felt something quieter.
