Chapter 6 - The Locked Door
After Elena was rushed into surgery, hospital security removed Preston and Khloe from the medical wing.
Preston sat in a quiet consultation room, staring at his hands.
Khloe paced near the door.
“You need to calm down,” she said. “You acted based on the information you had.”
“The information you gave me.”
“I never forced you to do anything.”
Preston looked up.
Her voice had changed.
The frightened intern was gone. In her place stood someone cold and calculating.
“Did Elena really demand unnecessary surgery?”
Khloe crossed her arms. “She complained constantly.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“You’re upset.”
“Did she demand it?”
Khloe remained silent.
Preston stood.
“What did you do?”
Before she could answer, the door opened.
Dr. Morgan entered with Nurse Rosa and the hospital’s chief administrator.
Preston searched Dr. Morgan’s face.
“Is Elena alive?”
“She survived the surgery,” Dr. Morgan said.
His shoulders collapsed with relief.
“And Samuel?”
“Your son is stable.”
Preston closed his eyes.
But Dr. Morgan’s expression did not soften.
“Elena experienced a preventable crisis because intervention was delayed.”
“I thought she was exaggerating.”
“Based on what medical evidence?”
Preston glanced at Khloe.
Dr. Morgan placed a document on the table.
“This is the delivery plan you failed to read. It states clearly that surgery might become necessary. It also states that you had no authority to interfere.”
“I never saw that copy.”
“The record shows it was printed and delivered to your department.”
Everyone turned toward Khloe.
She stepped backward.
Dr. Morgan continued.
“Security footage shows Ms. Bennett removing the document from the office tray.”
Khloe’s face went pale.
“That proves nothing.”
Nurse Rosa placed a tablet on the table.
“It also recorded your conversation in the corridor.”
The video showed Khloe telling Preston that Elena wanted surgery only to punish him and prove she controlled the marriage.
Another clip showed Khloe smiling after Preston refused the medical team.
Preston watched in silence.
Then came the worst part.
The recording captured Khloe saying, “Once the baby is born, she won’t matter anymore.”
Preston lowered himself into the chair.
