Chapter 8 - The Investigation

The hospital investigation moved quickly because the evidence was impossible to ignore.
Khloe had accessed records unrelated to her assigned duties. She had removed a printed medical instruction, altered internal notes and spread false claims about Elena.
Further review uncovered her earlier attempt to hide a patient-file error.
She was dismissed from the hospital and referred to the proper licensing authorities.
Preston faced a separate investigation.
He tried to explain that he had been manipulated.
The review board acknowledged Khloe’s deception but refused to treat it as an excuse.
“You were not acting as Elena’s physician,” the chairman told him. “You were acting as a husband who used his professional status to intimidate the team responsible for her care.”
Preston’s hospital privileges were suspended.
He was also required to undergo an ethics review and psychological evaluation before he could apply for reinstatement.
The local medical community learned enough of the truth that his reputation collapsed almost overnight.
The same people who once admired his confidence now questioned his judgment.
Preston moved into a small rented apartment.
For the first time since medical school, he had no title protecting him, no wife supporting him and no intern praising him.
Khloe contacted him once.
She accused him of abandoning her and threatened to reveal their private messages.
Preston sent the entire conversation history to the investigators.
He no longer tried to protect her.
But exposing Khloe did not repair what he had done.
One month after Samuel’s birth, Elena agreed to meet Preston in the hospital garden.
Mara waited nearby.
Preston appeared older. His clothes hung loosely on him, and the confidence that once filled every room had disappeared.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Elena looked at him calmly.
“I believe you regret what happened.”
“I regret everything.”
“That isn’t the same as understanding it.”
Preston swallowed.
“I chose to believe someone who made me feel important. I treated your fear like an inconvenience. I used my position to silence you.”
Elena said nothing.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he continued. “But I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to become someone Samuel won’t be ashamed of.”
May you like
Elena looked toward Mara, then back at him.
“That work is yours to do. It will not be my job to guide you through it.”
