Chapter 4 - The Hidden Report
Khloe’s interest in Elena’s delivery plan was not accidental.
Weeks earlier, Khloe had made a serious mistake while assisting with a hospital case. She had entered incorrect information into a patient file and attempted to correct it without reporting the original error.
Elena had unknowingly witnessed part of the incident while waiting near a nurses’ station.
She had seen Khloe arguing with a staff member and had heard the words altered record.
Elena mentioned it to Preston, believing he should know.
Preston confronted Khloe privately.
Khloe immediately began crying.
“It was a misunderstanding,” she claimed. “Elena must have heard part of a conversation.”
Preston asked whether she had changed a record.
“I corrected a typing error. That’s all.”
He accepted her explanation.
Khloe did not forget Elena’s involvement.
She began to view Preston’s wife as a threat to her career and her growing influence over him.
Days before Elena went into labor, Khloe accessed the internal schedule and learned that Elena’s medical team had recommended possible emergency intervention.
She also discovered something Preston had overlooked.
Dr. Morgan had filed a written instruction stating that Preston was not to interfere in medical decisions during Elena’s delivery. As Elena’s husband, he could support her, but he could not act as her physician.
Khloe deleted the printed copy from a shared office tray before Preston saw it.
She could not remove the official digital record, but she assumed nobody would check until after the birth.
Then she began telling Preston that Elena had manipulated Dr. Morgan into approving unnecessary surgery.
“She wants you to feel powerless,” Khloe said.
Preston’s pride did the rest.
He began believing the delivery was no longer about Elena’s safety.
In his mind, it became a battle over authority.
On the morning Elena went into labor, Khloe happened to be working at the hospital.
When Preston received Elena’s frightened call, Khloe was standing beside him.
“She’s probably overreacting,” she said.
Preston should have left immediately.

Instead, he waited twenty minutes to finish his rounds.
Those twenty minutes would later return to him in every nightmare.
