Chapter 9 - the arrest Barbara prepared

Detective Grant entered with two uniformed officers.

He was broad-shouldered, grey-haired, and calm.

"Emily Carter?"

Emily stood.

"Yes."

"I need you to come with me."

"For what?"

"Barbara Carter filed a complaint."

Mark stepped between them.

"About what?"

"Assault."

Emily almost laughed.

"She locked my daughter outside."

"We can discuss that at the station."

Daniel stood.

"Is she under arrest?"

Grant looked at him.

"Who are you?"

"Daniel Reeves."

Recognition flickered across the detective's face.

Too fast for most people to notice.

Daniel noticed.

"So you know me."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"I know the name."

Emily held up her phone.

"We also have evidence related to William Carter's death."

The detective's expression remained neutral.

"Bring it to the station."

"No."

"Mrs. Carter."

"No."

Grant sighed.

"You're making this difficult."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Samuel."

Grant looked at him.

For the first time, the detective lost control of his expression.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Mark stared between them.

"You know Thomas too?"

Grant recovered.

"Twenty years ago."

Thomas smiled coldly.

"You always were bad at pretending."

The officers looked confused.

Emily began recording openly.

Grant noticed.

"Turn that off."

"No."

"You are being detained."

"For what?"

"Assault."

"And my daughter?"

"We're arranging appropriate care."

Emily's stomach dropped.

"What does that mean?"

Grant avoided her eyes.

Mark stepped forward.

"She's staying with me."

Grant looked at his paperwork.

"At this time, Mr. Carter, there is an emergency child welfare petition naming Barbara Carter as temporary caregiver."

Mark went white.

Emily understood the trap.

Barbara had already filed.

The confrontation had merely completed the story she planned to tell.

Emily as violent.

Emily fleeing with Chloe.

Emily refusing police instructions.

Every move could be interpreted against her.

She forced herself to become calm.

"I'll cooperate."

Mark stared.

"Emily."

She squeezed his hand.

"Call an attorney."

Daniel whispered, "Not Barbara's attorney."

"I know."

Emily crouched beside Chloe.

"You're staying with Daddy."

"No."

Chloe wrapped her arms around Emily.

"Mommy, no."

Emily fought tears.

"I need you to be brave."

"I want to come."

"You can't."

Grant looked uncomfortable.

That gave Emily a small amount of hope.

Perhaps he was corrupt.

Perhaps merely compromised.

Either way, emotion would not save her.

Evidence might.

As Emily was escorted toward the cruiser, Chloe shouted.

"She put Grandpa's medicine in his drink."

Everyone froze.

Grant turned.

"What did she say?"

Emily immediately stepped between him and Chloe.

"Do not question my child without legal representation."

Grant's eyes sharpened.

Thomas smiled.

"Things just got complicated, Samuel."

At the station, Emily refused to answer substantive questions.

Within ninety minutes, an attorney arrived.

Her name was Rachel Monroe.

Daniel had found her through an old contact.

Rachel was forty, relentless, and visibly unimpressed by Grant.

"Your assault complaint is weak," she said after reviewing the initial report.

"Emily admits striking Barbara."

"After discovering her five-year-old daughter locked outside."

"That does not excuse assault."

"No. But it does explain context. More importantly, your report says Barbara sustained significant injury."

Grant said nothing.

Rachel continued.

"The hospital notes say mild facial redness. No fracture. No concussion. No treatment beyond an ice pack."

Emily almost smiled.

Rachel placed another document on the table.

"And here's the interesting part. Barbara filed for emergency guardianship at 4:12 p.m."

Emily stared.

Hours before she arrived home.

Rachel nodded.

"Your mother-in-law expected something to happen tonight."

Grant's expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"Public filing system."

Daniel had been right.

Evidence mattered.

Rachel continued.

"And we have video that may show Barbara committing a serious crime relating to William Carter's death."

Grant stood.

"This interview is over."

"Why?"

"I need to speak with my supervisor."

Rachel watched him leave.

Then she leaned toward Emily.

"That man is scared."

"Of Barbara?"

"Maybe."

Emily looked through the glass.

Grant was on the phone.

His back was turned.

But the reflection in the observation window showed his screen.

A contact name.

May you like

B. CARTER.

Grant was calling Barbara.
