Chapter 14 - the truth Mark could not remember

Grant held a gun.

Emily pulled Chloe behind her.

Barbara extended her hand.

"The card."

Emily looked at Mark.

His lip was bleeding, but he was conscious.

"Don't give it to her."

Grant struck him across the shoulder.

"Quiet."

Barbara sighed.

"Samuel has become unnecessarily dramatic."

"You kidnapped my daughter," Emily said.

"I brought my granddaughter somewhere safe."

"You broke into my house."

"I used a key."

"You took Chloe through a window."

"Because police were obstructing the door."

Barbara said everything as though language could rewrite reality.

Emily finally understood why William had spent years documenting her.

Barbara did not merely lie.

She constructed alternate versions of events and lived inside them.

"The card," Barbara repeated.

Emily handed it over.

Barbara studied it.

"You made a copy."

"No."

"Of course you did."

She passed it to Grant.

"Check it."

Grant inserted it into a laptop inside the garage.

Daniel's duplicate contained genuine files.

Enough to look convincing.

Barbara relaxed slightly.

"Now we finish."

She placed legal documents on the table.

Mark stared.

"What are those?"

"Your resignation."

"No."

"And Emily's transfer of voting control."

"No."

Barbara looked almost disappointed.

"After everything I've done for you."

Mark laughed bitterly.

"You poisoned Dad."

Barbara's expression did not change.

"He was already dying."

"That's not an answer."

"He was destroying everything."

"You killed him."

"I corrected a situation."

Emily felt a chill.

Grant looked uncomfortable.

Perhaps even he had never heard Barbara admit that much.

Mark stared at his mother as if seeing her for the first time.

"You drugged me too."

Barbara's eyes narrowed.

"Laura."

Mark's expression confirmed it.

"You knew she was alive."

"I suspected."

"What did you give me?"

"Something to keep you calm."

"The night before Dad died?"

"You were hysterical."

"I don't remember the meeting."

"You didn't need to."

Emily took one small step sideways, placing herself between Chloe and Grant's line of sight.

Barbara continued.

"Your father wanted you to choose between him and me."

"No."

"He did."

"He wanted me to see what you were doing."

"You always believed him."

"I always defended you."

That silenced Barbara.

Mark's voice cracked.

"I defended you to Emily. To Dad. To Chloe. Even when I knew something was wrong."

Barbara looked at him.

"Because I'm your mother."

"That doesn't make you right."

"It makes me the reason you have everything."

"No."

Mark looked toward Emily.

"It's the reason I almost lost everything."

Barbara slapped him.

Hard.

Grant flinched.

Emily saw it.

A fracture in the alliance.

Barbara turned to Grant.

"Make him sign."

Grant didn't move.

"Samuel."

"No."

Barbara stared.

"What?"

"I'm done."

"Don't be ridiculous."

"I agreed to delay things. Clean reports. Make calls."

"You accepted money."

"I did not agree to kidnapping."

Barbara laughed.

"You crossed that line years ago."

Grant raised the gun.

But not toward Emily.

Toward Barbara.

"Step away from the table."

Barbara's expression changed.

"You weak little man."

"Move."

Barbara stepped toward him.

Grant backed up.

A vehicle roared outside.

Then another.

Police lights exploded through the trees.

Barbara spun toward Emily.

"You."

Emily smiled faintly.

"The card wasn't the only thing being copied."

The pendant around Chloe's neck contained a tiny recorder transmitter Daniel had given them before the meeting.

Everything Barbara said had been transmitted.

Her admission.

The documents.

The kidnapping.

William.

All of it.

Barbara rushed toward Chloe.

Emily intercepted her.

They collided.

Barbara grabbed Emily's hair.

Emily shoved her away.

Mark kicked the documents beneath the table.

Grant dropped the gun and raised his hands as police stormed the property.

Barbara stood in the center of the room.

For the first time, there was nowhere left for her story to hide.

An investigator handcuffed her.

She looked at Emily.

"This isn't finished."

Emily pulled Chloe close.

"It is for tonight."

Barbara smiled.

"No."

Her eyes moved toward Mark.

"Ask him what he signed eighteen months ago."

Mark went pale.

Emily stared.

"What is she talking about?"

May you like

Barbara was led outside laughing.

And Mark did not answer.
