Chapter 11 - the inheritance nobody expected

Emily initially thought she had misunderstood.
"Me?"
Daniel replayed the line.
The result was the same.
Control of Carter Architectural Group transfers automatically to Emily.
Mark looked almost relieved.
Thomas laughed softly.
"William, you stubborn bastard."
Rachel was already searching the storage box.
"There must be legal documents."
They found them twenty minutes later.
A sealed corporate succession agreement signed by William, two independent directors, and outside counsel.
The clause was explicit.
If Barbara Carter initiated or materially supported legal action intended to remove Mark from company leadership or alter Chloe's trust through incapacity allegations, controlling voting rights held by William's estate would temporarily transfer to Emily Carter.
"This is extraordinary," Rachel said.
"Is it legal?" Emily asked.
"Potentially. I'll need corporate counsel."
Mark sat on a box.
"Dad trusted you more than me."
Emily looked at him.
"No."
"Emily."
"He trusted me to stand up to your mother."
That hurt Mark because it was true.
They returned home under police protection.
The investigators issued a warrant for Barbara.
Not for William's death yet.
For financial fraud and evidence tampering.
Detective Grant was placed on administrative leave after investigators discovered repeated phone contact with Barbara.
By afternoon, news vans gathered outside the Carter house.
Mark's company stockholders began calling.
Board members demanded answers.
The family thriller had become a corporate crisis.
Emily hated every second.
Chloe asked why people were outside.
Emily told her there had been a grown-up disagreement.
Chloe considered this.
"Grandma is in trouble?"
"Yes."
"Because she put me outside?"
"Partly."
Chloe looked relieved.
Then guilty.
Emily noticed.
"Sweetheart, what is it?"
Chloe twisted Clementine's ear.
"I lied."
"About what?"
"The card."
Emily sat beside her.
"What do you mean?"
"I didn't take it from Grandma's sweater."
Emily's pulse increased.
"Where did you get it?"
"Grandpa gave it to me."
Silence.
"When?"
"A long time ago."
"Before he died?"
Chloe nodded.
"What did he say?"
"He said if Grandma ever made Daddy scared, I should give it to you."
Emily stared at her daughter.
"Why didn't you tell me before?"
"Grandma said Grandpa was confused."
"Did she know you had the card?"
"No."
"Then why was she looking for it?"
Chloe thought carefully.
"She was looking for another one."
Emily immediately called Daniel.
"There are two cards."
"How do you know?"
"Chloe."
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
Chloe explained.
The night before Emily returned, Barbara had gone into Mark's office searching drawers.
She repeatedly asked Mark about "William's backup."
Mark claimed ignorance.
Chloe had been coloring in the hallway.
She heard Barbara say:
"If Emily finds the original, everything changes."
The next morning, Chloe went into Mark's office looking for paper.
Barbara caught her.
She assumed Chloe had taken something.
That explained the punishment.
But not the second card.
"Where would William hide it?" Daniel asked.
Mark shook his head.
"He hid one in a bank box, one in a storage unit, one in a watch."
Thomas smiled.
"He loved redundancy."
Emily looked toward Chloe.
"Did Grandpa give you anything else?"
Chloe shook her head.
Then stopped.
"He gave Daddy something."
Mark frowned.
"The watch."
"No."
Chloe pointed toward his chest.
"Under your shirt."
Mark slowly touched the chain around his neck.
He wore his father's wedding ring there.
After William died, Mark had refused to put it on his finger but couldn't bring himself to store it away.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Take it off."
Inside the ring was a nearly invisible engraving.
Numbers.
4 12 9 2 18 1 18 25.
Emily read them.
"Four, twelve, nine, two, eighteen, one, eighteen, twenty-five."
Daniel translated letters.
D L I B R A R Y.
Thomas corrected him.
"Not D. The first number might be twenty."
20 12 9 2 18 1 18 25.
T L I B R A R Y.
Mark stared.
"The library."
William's private study had a wall of books.
Daniel smiled.
"Which book?"
Mark looked at the ring again.
A second engraving appeared beneath the first.
147.
Book one hundred forty-seven.
They entered William's study.
Mark counted.
One hundred forty-five.
One hundred forty-six.
One hundred forty-seven.
A leather-bound copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.
Inside, the pages had been hollowed out.
A memory card rested in the center.
Emily whispered, "The original."
Daniel reached for it.
May you like
The front door alarm sounded.
Someone had entered the house.
