Chapter 15 - The Voice on Claire’s Recorder

Within ten days, Kane Medical Systems began to collapse.

Federal investigators froze company accounts and seized records from twelve medical facilities. St. Catherine’s terminated its contracts with Kane Medical and created an independent review board for every research program connected to the company.

Victor Hale was denied release while awaiting trial.

The security men who entered Nathan’s house accepted cooperation agreements and identified senior executives involved in unauthorized transfers.

Marcus Kane faced charges related to abduction, fraud, evidence destruction, unlawful surveillance, and medical misconduct.

For Elena, Lily, Eva, and Noah, the legal changes were immediate.

The emergency custody order became enforceable. Marcus was prohibited from contacting the children. Independent doctors safely removed the twins’ monitoring devices and preserved them as evidence.

The procedures went well.

For the first time in months, Elena slept beside her children without keeping a chair against the door.

Nathan visited the pediatric unit every morning.

Lily rarely spoke about the north bridge, but she began drawing again. Most of her pictures showed the mountain house surrounded by snow. In every drawing, the iron gate stood open.

Rosa arranged temporary housing for the family through a confidential protection program.

“They can stay with me,” Nathan said.

Rosa looked at him carefully.

“Are you offering because it is safe or because you cannot stand another empty house?”

“Both.”

Elena accepted on the condition that officers inspect the property and replace the damaged security system.

Two weeks after the storm, the children returned to the place where the sled journey had ended.

The living room windows had been repaired. The basement passage was permanently sealed. The red emergency lights still marked the trail below the terrace.

Lily stood beside the fireplace.

“This room looked bigger when I thought we were going to die.”

Nathan crouched to her height.

“You were never going to die.”

“You didn’t know that.”

“No.”

“But you said we were safe.”

“I needed you to believe it.”

She studied him for a moment.

“Did you believe it?”

“Not until the deputies arrived.”

Lily nodded as if honesty mattered more than reassurance.

That evening, Elena prepared dinner while Rosa fed the twins. Nathan repaired the damaged frame around Claire’s photograph.

For several hours, the house sounded alive again.

Yet Nathan had not forgotten the memory card hidden inside Claire’s scarf.

He waited until everyone was asleep before entering the upstairs study.

The card contained hundreds of encrypted files. Most required software Nathan did not possess, but one audio file opened immediately.

Claire’s voice came through the speakers.

“Nathan, this recording is separate from the evidence against Marcus Kane.”

He sat motionless.

“If you are listening, Marcus has probably been exposed. That will feel like an ending. It is not.”

A faint sound could be heard behind Claire’s voice, like a train moving through a tunnel.

“Marcus inherited the program. Victor Hale expanded it. Philip protected parts of it without understanding everything he served.”

Nathan leaned closer.

“But Adrian built the network.”

The recording paused.

“He has used several names. He changes identities by taking the records of children who disappeared inside the foster system. The name Adrian Ward may no longer mean anything.”

Nathan heard footsteps in the hallway outside the study.

He stopped the recording.

The door opened.

Philip entered.

“How did you get into the house?” Nathan asked.

“Rosa let me stay in the guest room. She said the roads were freezing.”

Nathan removed the memory card from the computer.

Philip noticed.

“You found Claire’s final evidence.”

“What do you know about it?”

“Only that Marcus spent four years searching for it.”

Nathan placed the card in his pocket.

“Why didn’t you tell me Claire believed Adrian was alive?”

“Because I didn’t believe her.”

“And now?”

Philip looked toward the dark window.

“Now Marcus is asking for protective custody inside a military facility.”

“Why?”

“He claims Adrian has people inside every federal detention center.”

Nathan studied his brother.

“Does he?”

Philip did not answer.

A baby began crying downstairs.

Nathan and Philip left the study.

When they reached the living room, Elena was standing beside the sled.

It had been placed outside the glass doors.

The same wooden sled Lily had used during the storm.

No one had brought it back from police storage.

A black envelope rested inside.

Nathan opened the terrace door carefully and retrieved it.

The envelope contained a recent photograph.

Claire stood outside a train station.

She wore the same red scarf hidden in Nathan’s travel bag.

The date printed in the corner was from three days earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

Your wife survived.

Ask Philip where she has been.

Nathan slowly raised his eyes.

Philip was no longer in the living room.

The front door stood open.

A car engine started beyond the gate.

Nathan ran outside as the vehicle disappeared down the mountain.

Behind him, Claire’s recorder activated by itself.

A man’s voice replaced hers.

“Hello, Nathan.”

He spoke with calm familiarity, as though they had met before.

“You protected my daughter from Marcus. For that, I owe you a conversation.”

Nathan turned toward the security monitor.

A live camera feed showed a train moving through an unknown station.

A woman with red hair stood behind one of the windows.

Before Nathan could see her face clearly, the train entered a tunnel.

The screen went black.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Bring Lily to me, and Claire comes home.”

The recording ended.
