Chapter 13 - The Name Claire Erased

Nathan believed Elena had made a mistake.
Claire had no brother.
She had grown up in foster care after her parents died. She rarely spoke about her childhood, but she had always described herself as an only child.
Elena insisted.
“His name was Adrian Ward.”
“Ward was your maiden name,” Nathan said.
“It was also his.”
“Are you related?”
“No. The name was assigned to us by the same foster family.”
Nathan’s thoughts moved backward through old memories.
Claire had once awakened from a nightmare and said someone named Adrian had found her. When Nathan asked who Adrian was, she blamed the name on a case she was working.
He had accepted the explanation.
“What was his relationship to Claire?” Rosa asked.
“They were raised together for six years. Claire considered him her brother.”
“Why did she never mention him?”
“Because Adrian became involved in medical data theft. He sold patient information to private research companies.”
“Was he working for Marcus?”
“Before Marcus,” Elena said. “Adrian helped build the system Marcus later controlled.”
Nathan looked at Lily.
“And Adrian is Lily’s biological father?”
Elena’s silence answered.
Lily turned toward the wall.
“I knew it.”
Elena sat beside her.
“You knew Marcus wasn’t your father. You did not know anything else.”
“I knew you were afraid of someone worse than him.”
Nathan stepped into the corridor to control his emotions.
Claire had hidden an entire part of her life from him. He understood that fear could force people into silence, but understanding did not remove the pain.
Rosa followed.
“She was protecting you.”
“Everyone says that after a secret becomes impossible to defend.”
“She may have believed Adrian would use you to reach her.”
“He found her anyway.”
“We don’t know that.”
Nathan looked through the glass at Lily.
“If Adrian helped build the program, Marcus may be running from him too.”
That evening, investigators located Marcus’s abandoned vehicle near a private airfield. The plane registered to Kane Medical had not taken off, but the pilot was missing.
A search of Marcus’s office uncovered encrypted financial records, false medical reports, and surveillance photographs of Nathan’s house.
One photograph had been taken three months before Claire died.
Nathan stood on the terrace beside her, unaware that someone was watching from the trees.
The discovery destroyed Marcus’s claim that he had learned of the house only after Lily arrived there.
At midnight, an attorney contacted federal investigators on Marcus’s behalf.
Marcus offered to surrender in exchange for protective custody.
He claimed Adrian Ward was planning to kill him and recover the children.
The investigators refused to negotiate without Marcus’s location.
Two hours later, Marcus walked into a rural sheriff’s office seventy miles away.
He carried no weapon and offered no resistance.
News networks broadcast the arrest live.
Elena watched from the hospital.
Lily watched too.
Nathan expected relief.
Instead, Lily whispered, “That isn’t him.”
Rosa moved closer to the television.
The man being placed into the police vehicle resembled Marcus. Same height. Same dark coat. Same carefully controlled expression.
But Lily was certain.
“His left hand,” she said. “Daddy broke his little finger when I was seven. It bends inward.”
The man on the screen raised both hands.
Neither finger was damaged.
Nathan called the sheriff.
By the time officers checked, the prisoner had collapsed inside the transport vehicle.
He was alive but unconscious from an unknown substance.
Fingerprint analysis revealed his identity.
He was a former Kane Medical employee named Samuel Price.
Marcus had sent a substitute.
The arrest had been a distraction.
While every major agency focused on the rural sheriff’s office, someone entered St. Catherine’s through the west loading dock.
The pediatric security alarm activated.
Nathan ran toward Lily’s room.
The guards lay conscious but disoriented in the hallway. Their radios were gone.
Inside the room, Elena held Eva while Rosa stood protectively beside Noah.
Lily’s bed was empty.
On the pillow was Claire’s unopened letter.
Across the front, someone had written a new message.
