Chapter 14 - The North Bridge

The investigators ordered Nathan to remain at the hospital.

He refused.

“Lily is twelve years old. Whoever took her expects me.”

“That is exactly why you cannot go alone,” the sheriff said.

“I’m not asking to go alone. I’m asking you to make them believe I did.”

The plan was arranged in less than twenty minutes.

Nathan would drive Claire’s old station wagon to the north bridge with a duplicate evidence box. Officers would follow at a distance without lights. A tracking device was hidden inside the box, and Nathan wore a small transmitter beneath his coat.

Rosa wanted to accompany him.

Nathan shook his head.

“The message named me.”

“You have already spent four years pretending losing Claire means you have nothing left to lose.”

“This is not about Claire.”

“It is always about Claire.”

Nathan looked toward the infant room.

“Elena needs you.”

“So do you.”

He had no answer.

Rosa placed Claire’s letter into his hand.

“You should read it before you go.”

Nathan entered an empty office and opened the envelope.

Claire’s handwriting covered four pages.

Nathan,

There are truths I should have told you while I still had time. I convinced myself that silence protected you, but silence only gives dangerous people more space.

Adrian was my foster brother. For years, I believed he saved me from a cruel home. I later learned he had selected me because my records gave him access to children inside the foster system.

When I discovered what he was doing, I helped several families disappear. Elena was one of them.

Adrian believes Lily belongs to him because she carries his genetic material. He does not understand love, only ownership.

Marcus fears Adrian, but he has copied many of his methods. Never mistake one enemy’s fear for innocence.

There is one final piece of evidence that neither Marcus nor Adrian has found. I hid it inside something you would never throw away.

I am sorry I made grief responsible for carrying my secrets.

I loved you.

Claire

Nathan read the final lines twice.

Something he would never throw away.

His mind went immediately to the photograph in the mountain house.

But the house was under police protection, and the image had been examined after the break-in.

Then he remembered the red scarf Claire wore in the photograph.

Nathan still had it.

Not at home.

He kept it in the pocket of an old travel bag stored inside his car.

He went to the parking garage and opened the station wagon’s rear compartment. Beneath emergency supplies was the faded bag from their last trip together.

The scarf lay inside.

Nathan felt along the fabric.

A small object had been sewn into the hem.

He cut one stitch with his pocket medical scissors and removed a memory card.

The original evidence.

He did not tell the investigators.

Not yet.

At the north bridge, snow drifted across the empty road. The river below moved black beneath the ice.

Nathan placed the duplicate box on the hood of the car.

A figure emerged from the far end of the bridge.

Marcus Kane walked toward him alone.

“Where is Lily?” Nathan asked.

“Safe.”

“You used a substitute.”

“I needed time.”

“For what?”

“To move Elena and the infants before Adrian reached them.”

“They are under federal protection.”

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Federal systems are built from the same technology Adrian helped create.”

“You abducted Lily.”

“I removed her from the hospital before his team could.”

“Where is she?”

Marcus stopped several yards away.

“Give me the evidence.”

“You first.”

A car door opened behind the abandoned toll station.

Lily stepped out.

She was frightened but unharmed.

Nathan moved toward her.

Marcus raised one hand.

“Stop.”

A red targeting light appeared on Nathan’s coat.

Someone watched from the ridge above the bridge.

Marcus looked up, genuinely afraid.

“That isn’t one of my people.”

Lily ran toward Nathan.

A loud crack echoed from the ridge.

The duplicate evidence box exploded apart on the hood of the car.

Nathan pulled Lily behind the engine block.

Police vehicles approached from both sides of the bridge.

Marcus dropped to the road and covered his head.

Officers surrounded the area. A second team moved toward the ridge, but the shooter escaped into the forest.

Marcus was taken into custody.

This time, fingerprint and medical verification confirmed his identity.

Lily returned safely to Elena.

The evidence from Claire’s scarf remained hidden in Nathan’s pocket.

As officers drove Marcus away, he looked through the vehicle window at Nathan.

Then he mouthed three words.

He found you.
