Chapter 11 - Case 7B
Claire’s former office had not been used in years.
Dust covered the shelves. Cardboard boxes filled the corners. A faded sign still identified the space as the St. Catherine’s Patient Advocacy Department.
Nathan remembered visiting Claire there.
She had helped families challenge insurance denials, locate safe housing, and understand consent forms written to confuse them. She often returned home angry at systems designed to exhaust people until they surrendered.
Rosa entered the archive code from Claire’s note into an old wall cabinet.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a steel deposit box with two keyholes.
The black key separated into two matching pieces.
Nathan and Rosa inserted them together.
The box unlocked.
Inside were three folders, a digital recorder, and an unopened letter addressed to Nathan.
He reached for the letter first.
Rosa stopped him.
“Evidence before emotions.”
Claire would have said the same thing.
Nathan opened the first folder.
CASE 7B appeared across the top.
The file described a woman named Mara Bell, twenty-eight years old, who had participated in a fertility treatment program funded by the Kane Children’s Foundation. She had been told her embryos were nonviable.
According to the records, two embryos had survived.
They had been transferred to another patient without Mara’s knowledge.
Elena Kane.
Nathan felt sick.
“Eva and Noah may be Mara’s biological children,” Rosa said.
The second folder contained similar cases.
Seven women.
Eleven infants.
All connected to fertility clinics acquired by Kane Medical.
Some children had later entered monitoring programs at charitable hospitals.
The third folder concerned Lily.
Her original birth certificate listed Elena as her mother and Marcus Kane as her father.
But attached DNA reports excluded Marcus as Lily’s biological parent.
A handwritten note from Claire appeared in the margin.
Marcus knows. He uses Lily’s identity to control Elena. Biological father unknown.
Nathan activated the digital recorder.
Claire’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, then I failed to bring the evidence forward safely.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
He had not heard her voice in four years.
Claire continued.
“Kane Medical is using vulnerable families to build a private database of pediatric genetic information. The implants are only one part of the program. Marcus Kane did not create the system, but he protects it because it gave him power over donors, hospitals, and government contracts.”
Rosa looked toward Nathan.
Claire’s recording went on.
“Elena attempted to leave with Lily after discovering the infant transfer program. Marcus used medical evaluations and altered custody reports to discredit her. Philip Mercer witnessed several agreements, but I do not know whether he understands their purpose.”
A noise came from the hallway.
Nathan stopped the recording.
The door handle moved.
Rosa quietly called hospital security.
No signal appeared.
The power to the archive room shut off.
A man spoke from the other side of the door.
“Dr. Mercer, give me the recorder.”
Nathan recognized the security guard from the stairwell.
“Police are in the building,” he replied.
“They are protecting the pediatric unit. They are not here.”
Rosa moved toward a second door behind the shelves.
Claire’s office had once connected to the old courtroom consultation rooms. Nathan pushed aside a filing cabinet and found the exit.
They carried the evidence into the adjoining corridor.
The guard entered the archive as they escaped through the rear door.
An alarm sounded.
Nathan and Rosa ran toward the main hospital.
At the corner, someone stepped from the shadows.
Philip raised one hand.
“Do not shout.”
Nathan grabbed his coat and pushed him against the wall.
“How did you get here?”
“The police brought me for questioning.”
“Did you send that guard?”
“No.”
“Who selected the families?”
Philip’s face lost color.
“Hale told you.”
“Answer me.”
“I prepared a legal framework. I was told it was for expanded fertility access.”
“You wrote contracts that allowed embryos to be transferred without consent.”
“I did not know that clause would be used.”
Nathan held up the Case 7B file.
“Mara Bell. Do you know her?”

Then he whispered, “She is the reason Claire died.”
