Chapter 15 - The Photograph She Was Never Supposed to See

The woman stepped into the cabin.

Claire stared at her.

The resemblance was subtle.

The eyes.

The jaw.

The voice.

But it wasn't enough.

Mike moved in front of Claire and Mia.

“Don't come any closer.”

The woman smiled.

“You still protect her.”

Mike's expression hardened.

“I always will.”

Harold entered behind her.

Nathan remained outside.

Claire looked at Harold.

“You knew.”

Harold said nothing.

“You knew Mike was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Mia.”

Harold's eyes shifted toward the little girl.

“I knew enough.”

Claire's anger erupted.

“You destroyed my life.”

Harold shook his head.

“No. I kept you alive.”

Mike stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.”

The woman laughed softly.

“You still think you're the hero.”

Mike looked at her.

“What do you want?”

She answered:

“The photograph.”

Claire's hand tightened around the old picture.

“No.”

The woman smiled.

“You still don't understand what you're holding.”

Claire looked down.

The photograph showed Mike beside a shadowed figure.

But now she noticed something she hadn't seen before.

There was writing behind them.

A date.

A hospital name.

And beneath it, a handwritten sentence.

THE FIRST CHILD WAS NEVER CLAIRE'S.

Claire stared.

“What does this mean?”

No one answered.

Mia reached for her hand.

“Mommy?”

Claire looked at her daughter.

Mia whispered:

“Daddy told me the picture would help you remember.”

Mike looked at Mia in shock.

“When did I tell you that?”

Mia frowned.

“Yesterday.”

Claire stared at Mike.

Yesterday?

Mike had not been with Mia yesterday.

He had been hidden for two years.

Then who had spoken to her?

Mia pointed toward the woman.

“She did.”

The cabin went silent.

The woman smiled.

Mike slowly stepped backward.

Claire held Mia closer.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at Claire.

“You really don't remember.”

She reached into her coat.

Claire prepared herself.

But instead of a weapon, she pulled out another photograph.

She placed it on the table.

Claire picked it up.

Her hands began trembling.

The photograph showed Claire as a teenager.

Beside her stood Mike.

Beside Mike stood Daniel.

And behind them was Harold.

But there was one more person.

A little girl.

The girl looked exactly like Claire.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Same scar above the eyebrow.

Claire whispered:

“That's me.”

The woman shook her head.

“No.”

Claire looked at her.

The woman pointed to the girl.

“That is your sister.”

Claire couldn't breathe.

“I don't have a sister.”

“You did.”

Mike closed his eyes.

Claire turned toward him.

“You knew.”

Mike said nothing.

“You knew all along.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From my own sister?”

The woman smiled.

Then she placed a final photograph beside the first.

This one showed the little girl standing beside Mike.

Claire stared at it.

The child was older.

Maybe five.

Maybe six.

And written on the back were three words.

SHE SURVIVED TOO.

Claire looked toward the woman.

The woman whispered:

“Now ask Mike why your sister has been looking for you.”

Outside, a car engine roared to life.

Harold stepped toward the door.

Nathan suddenly shouted from outside.

“Get down!”

A loud crash echoed through the trees.

Everyone froze.

Mike grabbed Mia.

Claire dropped behind the table.

When she looked up again, the woman was gone.

So was Harold.

Nathan stood outside, staring toward the road.

Claire ran to the window.

A black vehicle disappeared into the distance.

She turned toward Mike.

“Who was that woman?”

Mike looked at the photograph.

His face was filled with something Claire had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for her.

“She isn't your sister,” he whispered.

Claire stared.

“Then who is she?”

Mike didn't answer.

He looked at Mia.

Then at the photograph.

Then toward the road where the car had disappeared.

Finally, he said:

“She is the reason I had to pretend I was dead.”

Claire felt the world tilt beneath her.

“Why?”

Mike looked directly into her eyes.

“Because two years ago, I discovered something about you.”

Claire's voice became barely audible.

“What?”

Mike stepped closer.

“You weren't the person they were trying to protect.”

He paused.

“You were the person they were trying to find.”

Outside, Nathan shouted again.

Mike suddenly grabbed Claire's hand.

“We have to leave. Now.”

“Where?”

Mike looked toward the dark forest.

“Somewhere Harold can't find us.”

Claire tightened her grip on Mia.

“But you said Harold wasn't the one behind this.”

Mike looked at her.

“He isn't.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“Then who is?”

Mike opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, Claire's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Ask Mike what happened the night you were born.”

The call ended.

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

Mike stared at her.

Mia looked between them.

And from somewhere deep inside the cabin came the sound of a door unlocking.

Claire turned.

A hidden passage opened beneath the floor.

Inside was a staircase leading into darkness.

On the first step lay a photograph.

Claire picked it up.

It showed her mother holding a newborn baby.

But the baby wasn't Claire.

Written on the back were four words.

YOUR STORY STARTED BEFORE MIKE.

Claire looked at Mike.

He looked at the photograph.

Then he whispered:

“Now you finally know why I was afraid to come home.”

The lights in the cabin went out.

A child's voice came from the darkness.

“Mommy?”

Claire turned toward Mia.

But Mia was still holding her hand.

The voice came again.

This time from beneath the floor.

“Mommy…”

Claire stared into the hidden passage.

And someone whispered her name from the darkness.

May you like

“Clara…”

SMASH CUT TO BLACK.
