Chapter 1 - The Man She Buried

Two years earlier, Claire Bennett had believed grief had a shape.
She thought it was the empty side of a bed.
The untouched coffee mug in the kitchen.
The jacket hanging behind the bedroom door.
The photographs she couldn't bring herself to remove from the walls.
She had been wrong.
Grief had no shape.
It followed her.
It sat beside her at breakfast.
It waited in the silence after Mia fell asleep.
It appeared whenever a stranger had the same walk as Mike.
Whenever a dark-haired man laughed in the same way.
Whenever Claire smelled the cedar cologne Mike used to wear.
But she had learned to live with it.
For Mia.
Her daughter had been two years old when Mike died.
Too young to understand death.
Too young to understand why her father never came home.
Claire had told her that Daddy had gone somewhere very far away.
She hadn't told her the truth until Mia was old enough to understand.
Even then, Mia had never accepted it.
“He'll come back,” she used to say.
Claire always answered the same way.
“No, sweetheart. Daddy can't come back.”
Now, two years later, Claire was standing in the middle of a mansion beside a swimming pool, watching a man who looked nothing like Mike.
And yet her daughter had recognized him.
That was impossible.
After the lights returned, Claire searched the property.
Harold was nowhere.
Nathan was nowhere.
Security claimed neither man had left through the main gate.
Claire didn't believe them.
She found Mia sitting beneath a table, clutching the hem of her dress.
“Mia.”
The little girl looked up.
“Mommy…”
Claire knelt.
“Where did you get the photograph?”
Mia shook her head.
“Daddy gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Before.”
“Before what?”
Mia frowned.
“Before he went away.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“Mia, Daddy died.”
“No.”
The certainty in her daughter's voice frightened Claire more than tears would have.
“No, Mommy. Daddy told me not to tell.”
“Tell me what?”
Mia looked toward the dark hallway.
“He said Mr. Harold wasn't supposed to know I remembered.”
Claire couldn't breathe.
She had spent two years believing Mike's death was an accident.
A late-night drive.
A wet road.
A collision on a mountain highway.
The police report had been clear.
The funeral had been real.
The coffin had been closed.
But Claire suddenly realized something she had never questioned.
She had never seen Mike after the accident.
Not once.
The funeral director had told her the injuries were too severe.
She had accepted it because she had been broken.
Now she wondered whether that had been the point.
Someone had wanted her too broken to ask questions.
That night, Claire returned home with Mia.
She locked every door.
She checked every window.
Then she went into the attic.
For the first time since Mike's funeral, she opened the box containing his belongings.
Inside was his old wallet.
His watch.
A set of keys.
A photograph of Claire holding newborn Mia.
And a small black notebook.
Claire had never seen it before.
She opened the first page.
Three words were written in Mike's handwriting.
IF I DISAPPEAR, WAIT.
Claire stared at the page.
Her hands began to shake.
May you like
Because beneath the words was a date.
The date was three weeks before Mike's supposed death.
