Chapter 12 - The Betrayal

Claire met Daniel again.
She didn't tell him about the call.
She watched him carefully.
“Did Mike ever trust you?”
Daniel answered immediately.
“Yes.”
“Did he ever doubt you?”
Daniel hesitated.
“That depends on what you heard.”
Claire showed him the photograph.
Daniel's face changed.
“You found that.”
“Who is lying?”
Daniel sat down.
“I don't know anymore.”
“Then tell me everything.”
Daniel explained that Mike had discovered a secret operation inside Mercer Holdings.
But there had been another player.
Someone close to Mike.
Someone who had access to every plan.
Someone who knew Claire's movements.
Someone who could have arranged the fake death.
Claire understood.
“Nathan.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Harold?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Someone in your family.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“My family is dead.”
Daniel said nothing.
Then the door opened.
Elena entered.
She was holding a file.
“She's not dead.”
Claire turned.
“Who?”
Elena placed the file on the table.
Inside was Claire's mother's name.
Her mother had supposedly died when Claire was young.
But the file contained recent photographs.
A woman leaving a hospital.
A woman entering a bank.
A woman standing beside Harold.
Claire couldn't speak.
“My mother?”
Elena nodded.
“She was involved.”
“Why?”
“We don't know.”
Claire stared at the photograph.
Her mother was holding a child.
A baby.
Claire looked closer.
The baby wasn't Claire.
It was Mike.
Her mind went blank.
Daniel whispered:
“That's why Mike never told you.”
Claire looked at him.
“Tell me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Then the lights went out.
When they returned, Elena was gone.
Daniel was unconscious.
And Claire's mother's photograph had disappeared.
