Chapter 14 - The Secret Nobody Could Bury

Claire stared at her mother.
Years of grief.
Years of unanswered questions.
Years of believing she had been abandoned by death.
All of it collided at once.
“Why?”
Her mother looked at Mike.
“Because if she remembered, they would find her.”
Claire shook her head.
“Who are they?”
Her mother didn't answer.
Mike stepped forward.
“Tell her.”
The woman looked at him.
“You promised.”
“I promised to protect Claire.”
“And now?”
“Now she deserves the truth.”
Claire's mother finally spoke.
“The people behind Mercer Holdings have been operating for decades.”
Claire listened.
They had created false identities.
Hidden money.
Manipulated records.
Used companies to control people who knew too much.
But Harold wasn't the founder.
He was only one part of it.
Claire's mother had once worked against them.
Mike had discovered her records.
Daniel had helped him.
Elena had gathered financial evidence.
Nathan had tried to protect them.
But someone had betrayed the group.
Someone who knew exactly where Mike would be.
Someone who knew exactly how Claire would react.
Claire suddenly remembered the photograph.
Mike beside Harold.
Daniel beside them.
And the fourth person.
Her mother.
She looked at Mike.
“Why was I involved?”
Mike answered softly.
“Because you were the reason I stayed alive.”
Claire didn't understand.
Then Mia's voice came from outside.
“Mommy?”
Claire turned.
Mia stood in the doorway.
She had followed them.
Claire rushed toward her.
“Mia, what are you doing here?”
The little girl smiled.
“I found Daddy.”
Mike froze.
He looked at his daughter.
Tears filled his eyes.
Mia ran to him.
He dropped to his knees.
She wrapped her arms around him.
For the first time in two years, Mike held his daughter.
Claire watched them.
For one brief moment, everything felt right.
Then Mia looked over Mike's shoulder.
Her smile disappeared.
“Mommy…”
Claire turned.
“What?”
Mia pointed toward the trees.
“That's the man from the picture.”
Everyone looked outside.
A man stood beside the road.
Nathan.
But Nathan wasn't alone.
Harold stood beside him.
And between them was a woman Claire had never seen before.
Her mother whispered:
“No.”
Mike stood.
“That's impossible.”
Claire looked at him.
“Who is she?”
Mike's face went pale.
“That…”
He stopped.
The woman raised her hand.
On her finger was the same silver ring.
The same symbol.
Then she called Claire by a name Claire had never heard before.
“Clara.”
Claire froze.
Nobody had called her that in years.
Her mother stepped backward.

Mike whispered:
“That's not your mother.”
