Chapter 9 - The Airfield)

The warehouse was empty when Nathan arrived.

Almost.

Leonard's car sat outside.

The driver's door was open.

Inside the warehouse, a desk lamp burned beside stacks of shredded paper.

Michael found gasoline cans near the rear wall.

"They were destroying records."

Nathan saw a metal filing cabinet.

One drawer remained locked.

Michael forced it open.

Inside were insurance files.

Corporate files.

Medical files.

Then Nathan saw Emily's name.

He pulled the folder out.

It contained photographs of her car.

Repair invoices.

A map of the mountain road.

And a payment receipt from a small auto shop.

The payment had been made three days before Emily died.

Nathan read the service description.

Brake line inspection and replacement.

But Emily had never taken the car to that shop.

Michael called the shop owner.

The business had closed two years earlier.

The former mechanic agreed to speak by phone.

His memory was imperfect until Nathan mentioned the vehicle.

A silver Range Rover.

The mechanic became silent.

"Who are you?"

"Nathan Whitmore."

Another pause.

"Oh God."

Nathan gripped the phone.

"What?"

"A man paid me to work on that SUV."

"What did he ask you to do?"

The mechanic began breathing quickly.

"I thought it was insurance fraud."

"What did he ask?"

"To weaken one brake line."

Nathan closed his eyes.

Michael turned away.

"Who paid you?"

"I never knew his real name."

"Describe him."

"Thirty something. Dark hair. Expensive clothes."

Nathan looked at Michael.

Adrian.

"Did you ever see him again?"

"On television."

Nathan's eyes opened.

"When?"

"At your wedding coverage."

Nathan's voice dropped.

"Which man?"

"The bride's cousin."

The warehouse became completely silent.

Nathan ended the call.

For three years, grief had lived inside him like a wound.

Now it became something else.

Rage had structure.

A name.

Adrian Cole.

Michael found another folder.

"Nathan."

Inside were photographs of Vanessa.

Not surveillance photographs.

Professional profile photographs.

Attached was a typed document.

Subject: Vanessa Cole

Objective: Controlled introduction to N.W.

Nathan could not read for several seconds.

The document described his routines.

Charity events.

Restaurants.

Personal preferences.

His vulnerability following bereavement.

Even his tendency to respond positively to people who did not immediately ask about Emily.

Vanessa had been coached.

Nathan turned the page.

Phase Two: Child Integration.

There were notes about Olivia.

Favorite books.

Medical schedule.

Hearing aid model.

Fears.

Foods.

Nathan's hands began shaking.

They had studied his daughter before Vanessa ever hugged her.

A sound came from behind the warehouse.

Michael drew his weapon.

"Stay here."

He disappeared through the rear door.

Nathan ignored the instruction and followed.

Outside, a narrow runway stretched toward a row of hangars.

A black SUV accelerated away.

Michael shouted.

They ran toward their vehicle.

The pursuit lasted less than three minutes.

The SUV stopped abruptly beside a chain fence.

The driver's door opened.

Leonard Vale stepped out.

He raised both hands.

Nathan got out.

"Where's Vanessa?"

Leonard smiled faintly.

"You think Vanessa is in charge?"

Nathan walked toward him.

"Where is she?"

Leonard looked exhausted.

"Probably trying to save herself."

"What happened to Emily?"

For the first time, Leonard's smile disappeared.

Nathan repeated the question.

"What happened to my wife?"

Leonard looked toward Michael.

"You need to understand something, Nathan."

"I understand enough."

"No, you don't."

Leonard lowered his voice.

"Adrian was supposed to frighten her."

Nathan stopped.

Leonard continued.

"The brakes were never supposed to fail completely."

Nathan lunged.

Michael caught him before he reached Leonard.

"You killed her."

"I didn't touch the car."

"You ordered it."

"I told Adrian to scare her."

Nathan fought against Michael's grip.

Leonard shouted.

"It was Vanessa who changed the plan."

Nathan stopped.

Leonard's face had gone pale.

"She told Adrian Emily would never stop."

Nathan stared at him.

Then Leonard said the sentence that revealed just how much worse the conspiracy was.

"And Vanessa was in the car behind Emily when she went over the barrier."
