Chapter 2 - Eleven Days Before the Wedding)

Eleven days earlier, Nathan Whitmore believed he had finally rebuilt his life.
The mansion had become warm again.
Flowers filled the halls.
Wedding planners moved constantly through rooms that had remained quiet since Emily's death.
Olivia seemed happier than she had been in years.
At least Nathan thought she did.
That was the part that later haunted him.
He had mistaken silence for happiness.
Olivia had lost much of the hearing in her right ear after a severe infection when she was two. With her hearing aid, she could understand conversations well, although crowded rooms still overwhelmed her.
Nathan had learned to kneel when speaking to her.
To face her directly.
To slow down.
To watch her eyes.
Vanessa had appeared to learn those habits too.
When Nathan first introduced them, Vanessa had been patient.
She bought picture books.
She learned how to replace the hearing aid battery.
She attended two appointments with Olivia's audiologist.
Nathan remembered thinking that Emily would have wanted someone kind like Vanessa in Olivia's life.
Later he would hate himself for that thought.
The first warning appeared at breakfast.
Olivia sat at the enormous kitchen island eating strawberries while Vanessa reviewed wedding seating arrangements.
Nathan was preparing to leave for a board meeting.
"Don't forget I'll be late tonight," he said.
Vanessa kissed him.
"We'll survive."
Olivia looked up.
"Can I sleep in your room?"
Nathan smiled.
"Why?"
She glanced at Vanessa.
"No reason."
Vanessa laughed.
"She has been extra clingy lately."
Nathan touched Olivia's hair.
"Big wedding coming. That's probably all."
Olivia nodded.
Nathan left.
That afternoon, Olivia's preschool teacher called.
Her name was Hannah Parker.
"Mr. Whitmore, Olivia has been asking strange questions."
Nathan paused.
"What kind?"
"She asked whether fathers can still find their children if they live very far away."
Nathan felt a small chill.
"Did she say why?"
"No. She also asked if children have to leave when their father gets married."
Nathan was silent.
"I thought you should know."
"Thank you."
He called Vanessa.
She sounded genuinely surprised.
"Poor thing. She must think I'm replacing her."
Nathan felt guilty immediately.
That evening, he took Olivia into the garden.
They sat beneath Emily's favorite oak tree.
"Nobody is replacing you," Nathan told her.
Olivia looked down at her shoes.
"Even after you marry Vanessa?"
"Especially after."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Olivia watched his face carefully.
Then she asked something that confused him.
"What if papers say different?"
Nathan frowned.
"What papers?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
He assumed she had heard the adults discussing wedding documents.
Nathan pulled her close.
"Papers don't decide how much I love you."
She hugged him.
That should have been the moment he asked more questions.
Instead, his phone rang.
Leonard Vale.
Nathan answered.
"We need to discuss the trust amendments," Leonard said.
Nathan stood.
"What amendments?"
"The routine revisions after your marriage."
Nathan glanced at Olivia.
"What changes?"
"Mostly tax structure. Some temporary authority provisions while you're traveling."
Nathan and Vanessa were scheduled to spend ten days in Italy after the wedding.
Nathan had already decided Olivia would stay at the mansion with Grace and Michael.
"Send me the documents."
"I'll bring them personally."
"Why?"
"Because they involve Olivia's trust."
Nathan looked toward his daughter.
Olivia was watching him.
Something about her expression bothered him.
"Leonard, nothing changes regarding Olivia without my explicit approval."
"Of course."
"Not one thing."
"I understand."
After the call, Nathan went inside.
Olivia remained under the tree.
From an upstairs window, Vanessa watched her.
She did not know Nathan saw her.
Three minutes later, Vanessa walked into the garden.
Nathan was in the hallway, out of sight.
Vanessa crouched beside Olivia.
Nathan could not hear everything.
But he heard one sentence clearly.
"You shouldn't listen to grown-up conversations."
Olivia looked frightened.
Nathan almost stepped outside.
Then Vanessa smiled and kissed the top of Olivia's head.
The moment seemed harmless.
He continued upstairs.
That night, someone entered Nathan's office at 2:14 in the morning.
The mansion's security system recorded the door opening.
May you like
But the camera inside the hallway showed only darkness.
Someone had covered the lens.
