Chapter 13 - Emily's Chair)

Nathan did not use a public relations statement.

He did not hide behind attorneys.

He stood in front of the foundation board and told them everything.

Emily's investigation.

Larkspur Holdings.

Leonard's theft.

Adrian's role.

The forged medical reports.

Rebecca's confinement.

The plot against Olivia.

The planned plane sabotage.

And Emily's death.

Several board members cried.

Two resigned before the meeting ended.

One claimed he had suspected irregularities but lacked proof.

Nathan stared at him.

"Then you should have asked questions."

The man lowered his eyes.

Nathan announced an independent audit covering ten years.

He pledged personal funds to replace every dollar stolen from programs serving children.

He also announced that the foundation would create a legal defense program for families harmed by fraudulent institutionalization and guardianship abuse.

Sarah had not expected that part.

Afterward she asked, "When did you decide?"

Nathan watched Olivia through the office window.

"At Hawthorne."

He remembered Rebecca behind a locked door.

He remembered the fake report describing Olivia as dangerous.

"People like Leonard survive because frightened families don't have enough power to fight them."

Sarah smiled faintly.

"Emily would approve."

Nathan looked away.

"Maybe."

"You still blame yourself."

Nathan did not deny it.

"I brought Vanessa into Olivia's life."

"You were deceived."

"I ignored signs."

"Some."

"Enough."

Sarah sat across from him.

"Then learn from them. Don't turn guilt into another way of making everything about your failure."

Nathan looked at her.

She continued.

"Olivia doesn't need a father who spends the rest of his life punishing himself."

"What does she need?"

"The father who believed her."

That evening Nathan went home early.

Olivia was in the garden beneath Emily's oak tree.

Her new hearing aid had arrived.

It was small and silver with a pale blue accent she had chosen herself.

Nathan sat beside her.

"How does it feel?"

She touched it.

"Loud."

He laughed.

"Too loud?"

"Grace talks loud."

Grace shouted from the patio.

"I heard that."

Olivia giggled.

Nathan's smile faded when he noticed the little girl watching him.

"What?"

"Are you still getting married?"

Nathan blinked.

"No."

"Ever?"

He thought about the question.

"Maybe someday."

Olivia picked a blade of grass.

"Can I say no?"

Nathan smiled.

"To my future wife?"

She nodded seriously.

"You can tell me what you think."

"What if she's mean?"

"Then I hope you'll tell me before the wedding."

Olivia smiled.

Then her expression changed.

"Vanessa said Mommy didn't want me."

Nathan froze.

"What?"

Olivia stared at the grass.

"She said Mommy left because I was hard."

Nathan felt rage rise again, but he kept his voice calm.

"Look at me."

Olivia did.

"Your mother loved you more than anything."

"But I couldn't hear good."

"That never mattered."

"She didn't leave because of me?"

Nathan pulled Olivia onto his lap.

"No."

He told her something he had never said before.

"The night you were born, your mother stayed awake until sunrise because she was afraid she'd miss one of your breaths."

Olivia listened.

"She used to put her finger in your tiny hand, and you would squeeze it."

"Like this?"

Olivia wrapped her fingers around Nathan's.

"Exactly like that."

Nathan kissed her forehead.

"She did not leave you."

Olivia's eyes filled.

"Vanessa lied."

"Yes."

They sat beneath the tree until the sky darkened.

The criminal cases moved quickly after Vanessa's confession.

Adrian eventually admitted sabotaging Emily's car.

Dr. Trent's medical license was suspended while dozens of previous evaluations were reviewed.

Leonard was denied bail after prosecutors revealed the honeymoon plot.

Vanessa remained in custody.

Months later, Nathan received one final envelope from the district attorney.

Inside was an item found in Leonard's private safe.

A sealed letter.

Emily's handwriting was on the front.

For Olivia, when she is old enough to understand.

Nathan stared at it.

He did not open it.

Some things belonged to his daughter.

He placed it inside the red box.

But beneath the letter was something else.

A photograph Nathan had never seen.

Emily.

Rebecca.

And Leonard.

All three standing outside the Whitmore Foundation office nine years earlier.

On the back Emily had written one sentence.

Leonard knows who started Larkspur.

Nathan's stomach tightened.

Leonard had confessed to running the theft.

But Emily's note suggested he had not created it.

Someone else had.
