Chapter 7 - THE WINTER HOUSE

The Winter House stood ninety miles north of Westwood Hall on land the family had not used in decades.
Officially, it had been sold after the nursery fire.
Unofficially, the property remained hidden inside a chain of trusts controlled by the Westwood Foundation.
Adrian discovered the deed in a paper archive, not a computer.
Margaret begged him not to go.
“That is what they want,” she said.
“They have Daniel.”
“They may have killed Daniel years ago.”
“Then who is in the car?”
“Someone chosen to make Rachel follow.”
Rachel stood near the fireplace, her face hollow from exhaustion.
“I’m going.”
“No,” Adrian said.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“I do while someone is using your daughter as bait.”
Rachel stepped closer. “Daniel hid evidence in Emma’s toy. Sophie says he was here yesterday. That means he believed Emma could finish what he started.”
“She’s four.”
“And somehow she saw what every adult missed.”
Adrian had no answer.
They built a plan before sunset.
Police would establish a perimeter two miles from the Winter House. Adrian, Owen, and Rachel would approach in an unmarked vehicle. Emma and Sophie would remain at Westwood Hall under Margaret’s protection.
That was the plan.
At six fifteen, Emma disappeared.
Her guard was found asleep in the corridor, unharmed but drugged. A service elevator had been activated with Rachel’s access card. Security footage showed Emma walking alone through the kitchen, carrying Mr. Snow.
At the loading dock, a delivery van waited.
The driver wore Daniel’s face.
By the time Adrian received the alert, the van had left the estate.
Rachel nearly collapsed.
“You promised she was safe.”
Adrian watched the footage frame by frame.
Emma did not appear frightened.
At the van door, she handed the driver a folded paper. He read it, looked toward a camera hidden above the dock, and nodded.
Then he lifted Emma gently into the vehicle.
“She knew him,” Rachel whispered.
“Or believed she did.”
Sophie stood behind them.
“She went because of the song.”
“What song?” Adrian asked.
Sophie hummed four notes.
Rachel turned pale.
“Daniel used to sing that to her.”
Sophie reached into her sweater and produced another index card.
“I found it under my mattress.”
The card read:
6:15 - Emma leaves willingly.
Below that:
8:00 - Adrian chooses blood or truth.
The Winter House was covered in snow when they arrived.
The storm had intensified during the drive. Pines bent under wind. The old mansion appeared beyond the gate, its windows glowing amber against the night.
No police lights were visible. Adrian had ordered the perimeter kept dark.
The front door stood open.
Inside, the house was warm.
A fire burned in the entrance hall. Children’s shoes lined the wall in neat pairs. The sound of a music box drifted from upstairs.
Rachel called Emma’s name.
No answer.
On the dining table lay three place settings.
One for Adrian.
One for Rachel.
One for Owen.
Beside Adrian’s plate was a photograph of his father holding two boys.
Adrian recognized himself at age six.
The older boy beside him had been scratched out.
On the back, someone had written:
YOU WERE NEVER AN ONLY CHILD.
Owen searched the lower floor. Rachel found Emma’s stuffed rabbit on the staircase.
Its remaining ear had been opened.
Inside was a tiny transmitter.
“He tracked her,” Owen said. “Daniel put it there years ago.”
“Or Julian did,” Adrian replied.
At eight o’clock precisely, the music box stopped.
A projector turned on in the drawing room.
Madison appeared on the wall, seated in a chair. Her blue gown was torn. One side of her face was bruised.
“Adrian,” she said, looking into the camera, “if you are watching, Julian has Emma.”
Rachel rushed toward the screen.
“Where?”
Madison continued.
“He believes Emma can open the archive because Daniel trained her to remember the sequence. But Daniel never trusted him. Daniel changed the final key.”
The camera angle widened.
Daniel sat beside Madison, tied to another chair.
Alive.
Rachel whispered his name.
Daniel lifted his head.
“Rachel,” he said, voice breaking, “I’m sorry.”
A masked man stepped behind them.
He placed a gun against Daniel’s temple.
Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A calm male voice said, “You have one hour to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Your cousin’s blood or your family’s truth.”
The masked man removed his mask.
May you like
The scar across Julian Westwood’s mouth pulled when he smiled.
“Bring Margaret’s confession to the nursery,” he said. “Or Emma learns why the Westwoods never let children leave.”
