Chapter 13 - THE ARCHIVE OF LIES

The steel door opened onto a circular chamber.
No gold.
No jewels.
No paper files.
Only rows of black servers surrounding a single glass pedestal. On the pedestal rested an old leather ledger and a silver signet ring.
The ring bore the Westwood crest split down the center.
Julian stepped into the chamber first.
Adrian stopped him.
“It may be trapped.”
“Everything is trapped.”
The countdown continued above the door.
2:14:09.
Owen’s team scanned the room. No explosives were detected. Daniel, moved onto a medical stretcher, insisted on remaining conscious.
Rachel held Emma and Sophie near the entrance.
Adrian opened the leather ledger.
The first page contained a family tree.
Names had been added in different inks across decades. Some were circled. Some crossed out. Some marked with symbols.
Adrian Westwood: Public Heir.
Julian Westwood: First Son.
Rachel Cross: Hidden Branch.
Sophie Bell: Constructed Heir.
Emma Cross: Convergence.
Claire Westwood: Archive Keeper.
Beside Claire’s name was a final notation.
DECEASED AT BIRTH.
Adrian read it twice.
“If Claire died at birth, who is Madison?”
Julian took the ledger.
His face changed.
“No.”
“What?”
“This is Charles’s handwriting.”
He turned pages rapidly.
The records described a program far more extensive than Daniel had discovered. Children were assigned identities, histories, even family connections. Some were biological descendants. Others were selected for resemblance and trained to replace them.
“Madison may not be your sister,” Rachel said.
“Or she may not be Madison,” Adrian replied.
Daniel pointed weakly toward the servers.
“The source files will show.”
They activated the central terminal.
A menu appeared.
BIOLOGICAL RECORDS.
REPLACEMENT RECORDS.
PREDICTION EVENTS.
CURRENT OPERATIONS.
Adrian selected BIOLOGICAL RECORDS.
Access denied.
SIGNET REQUIRED.
Julian placed the silver ring on the pedestal.
The glass illuminated.
VOICE OF THE FIRST SON REQUIRED.
Julian leaned toward the microphone.
“My name is Julian Westwood.”
Access denied.
He tried again.
The system repeated its rejection.
Adrian looked at the ledger.
“What if ‘first son’ isn’t you?”
Julian’s anger returned. “I was born first.”
“According to records created by Charles.”
Rachel turned pages until she found Charles Westwood’s section.
Three sons were listed beneath his name.
Julian.
An unnamed infant marked transferred.
A third entry had been cut from the paper.
Emma touched the missing section.
“There was another boy.”
A video file opened automatically.
Charles Westwood appeared on screen, older than in any family photograph. His voice was calm.
“If this archive is open, the heirs have failed to remain separate.”
He described Project Heir as an attempt to protect the family by creating interchangeable successors. No single death, scandal, or betrayal could end the bloodline if another heir could assume the role.
“The public heir is not necessarily the biological heir,” Charles said. “Identity is an asset. Assets can be transferred.”
Adrian watched without blinking.
Charles continued.
“The child known as Adrian Westwood was selected after the nursery fire.”
Margaret made a sound behind them.
Nobody had heard her enter.
She stood in the vault doorway, guarded by federal officers.
Adrian turned slowly.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at the screen, then at him.
“It means Charles is still trying to poison you.”
“Answer me.”
“You are my son.”
“That is not what I asked.”
The screen displayed two infant photographs.
One labeled Adrian Westwood.
One labeled Subject A-2.
The babies looked identical.
Margaret began to cry.
“I don’t know which one survived.”
The words emptied the room.
Julian laughed, but there was no joy in it.
“All these years, and she doesn’t even know who you are.”
Adrian approached Margaret.
“Did my father know?”
“He believed you were Adrian.”
“Believed?”
“The fire destroyed the nursery records. Two boys were brought out. One died before morning. The tags had burned away.”
“Who was the second boy?”
Margaret looked at Julian.
“Charles’s unnamed son.”
Adrian might be Charles’s child.
Julian’s brother.
Not Margaret’s son.
The terminal chimed.
BIOLOGICAL MATCH AVAILABLE.
A scan had been completed using blood samples collected from the people in the room.
The result began to load.
Before it appeared, every screen went black.
Madison’s voice returned.
“You still think blood will tell you who you are.”
The countdown changed.
May you like
00:10:00.
The vault door began to close.
