Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE BENEATH THE HOUSE

Sophie had vanished from Westwood Hall at the same moment Emma disappeared from the hospital.
Security footage showed neither child leaving.
That meant the hidden network still controlled more passages than the police had discovered.
Daniel forced himself out of bed.
“The archive is beneath Westwood Hall,” he said. “Not the Winter House.”
Adrian assembled a team he trusted: Owen, two federal agents, Rachel, and Daniel despite the physician’s objections. Margaret remained under guard. Julian was questioned at the medical facility, but when told the children were missing, he gave only one answer.
“Ask the house where it keeps its heirs.”
At Westwood Hall, the ballroom remained closed behind police tape. Broken chandelier crystals still glittered between the floorboards. Adrian stood where Emma had first spoken and looked toward the grand staircase.
The little door had started everything.
But the archive, Daniel explained, could not be reached through Madison’s closet. That route led only to the observation level. The true entrance required two children of the bloodline to activate separate locks.
“Why children?” Rachel asked.
“Your grandfather believed adults could be corrupted by money. He designed the final system around descendants too young to understand its value.”
“That didn’t stop him from experimenting on them,” Adrian said.
They descended through the kitchen service tunnels. Daniel led them to a stone wall behind the wine cellar. Two handprints had been carved at different heights.
Fresh blood marked both.
Emma and Sophie had already opened it.
The wall moved aside.
Beyond was a staircase descending farther than the mansion’s foundations should allow.
At the bottom stood another house.
Not a room.
A house.
It was a perfect underground reconstruction of Westwood Hall’s main floor, built at half scale. Child-sized chairs surrounded a miniature dining table. Tiny portraits hung on the walls. A small ballroom chandelier glowed overhead.
Rachel whispered, “What is this place?”
Daniel’s voice broke. “The training house.”
Project Heir had raised children inside a model of the family estate, teaching them conversations, rituals, alliances, and secrets. They rehearsed being Westwoods before they were allowed to meet real people.
Names were written above the bedroom doors.
ADRIAN.
JULIAN.
RACHEL.
SOPHIE.
EMMA.
Rachel stared at her name.
“No.”
Daniel touched her shoulder.
She pulled away.
Inside Rachel’s room were photographs of her from infancy to adulthood. School records. Medical reports. Audio transcripts of private arguments. A wedding dress sketch she had drawn at age thirteen.
Her life had been documented before she entered it.
On the bed lay an adoption file.
Rachel opened it.
Father: Charles Westwood.
Mother: Eleanor Bell.
Sophie’s surname was Bell.
Rachel turned toward Daniel.
“Sophie is my sister?”
“Not exactly.”
A voice came from the miniature ballroom.
“She is your father’s final experiment.”
Sophie stood beneath the chandelier holding Emma’s hand.
Behind them was Madison.
Her blue gown had been replaced by a black coat. A pistol rested against Emma’s shoulder.
Rachel moved forward.
“Let them go.”
Madison smiled. “You still speak like staff.”
Daniel stepped beside Rachel.
“You lost, Madison.”
“No. I finally found the correct heirs.”
She pointed toward a steel vault door at the far end of the room. Two green lights glowed above it.
“The children opened the first lock. Rachel opens the second.”
“And Adrian?” Daniel asked.
Madison looked at him.
“Adrian is the sacrifice.”
Owen raised his weapon.
Madison pressed the gun closer to Emma.
“Put it down.”
He obeyed.
Adrian studied the vault. “What is inside?”
“Every crime. Every account. Every controlled judge, bought election, manufactured scandal, and replaced identity. Enough to destroy governments.”
“And you want it for money?”
Madison’s eyes flashed. “Money is what people ask for when they lack imagination.”
Emma looked up at Adrian.
In one hand, hidden by her dress, she held Mr. Snow’s loose black thread.
The thread stretched across the floor to Sophie.
Sophie’s fingers rested on a small lever beneath the miniature ballroom stage.
Adrian understood.
He took one step toward the vault.
Madison watched him.
“One more,” she said.
Adrian took it.
Emma pulled the thread.
Sophie yanked the lever.

The child-sized chandelier fell.
Darkness crashed over the room.
