Chapter 12 - MADISON’S REAL NAME

Gunfire exploded in the dark.

Adrian dropped and moved toward Emma’s last position. Owen fired once. Rachel screamed. Metal gears roared inside the underground house as emergency shutters descended.

A small hand found Adrian’s.

“Sir.”

He lifted Emma and crawled behind the miniature dining table.

Backup lights activated.

Madison was gone.

Daniel lay near the vault, blood spreading across his hospital shirt.

Rachel reached him first.

The bullet had struck his side, missing the heart but reopening internal injuries. Owen applied pressure while a federal agent called for medical support.

Sophie stood beside the stage lever, frozen.

“I didn’t know it would make the doors close.”

Rachel pulled her into an embrace with one arm while holding Daniel with the other.

“You saved Emma.”

Adrian examined the room.

The vault door remained sealed. Madison had escaped through a panel behind Rachel’s bedroom.

Emma pointed toward it.

“She said her name isn’t Madison.”

Sophie nodded. “It’s Claire.”

Daniel coughed.

“Claire Westwood.”

Adrian knelt beside him.

“Whose daughter?”

“Your father’s.”

The revelation landed with terrible clarity.

Madison had not been trained merely to enter Adrian’s life.

She had been born into it.

Daniel explained between shallow breaths. Adrian’s father had another child during his years in hiding. Claire’s mother died under suspicious circumstances. Charles found the girl first and raised her inside Project Heir. Later, Adrian’s father reclaimed her and trained her against Charles.

“She hated both of them,” Daniel said. “She believed the archive was her inheritance.”

“And she became engaged to her own half-brother?” Rachel whispered.

“She knew the engagement would never become a marriage. It was access.”

Adrian felt disgust, grief, and anger, but beneath all of it was something colder: recognition.

Madison had often watched him as though comparing herself to him. She knew childhood details he did not remember telling her. She hated Margaret with an intimacy that exceeded ordinary resentment.

“She wanted me to discover her,” Adrian said.

Daniel nodded. “Eventually.”

Medical teams reached the underground level and stabilized him.

While they prepared to move him, the vault emitted a low tone.

One green light turned red.

A screen activated.

IDENTITY SEQUENCE INCOMPLETE.

REQUIRED: FIRST SON.

Julian.

Adrian looked at Owen. “Bring him.”

Federal authorities refused at first. Julian was a violent suspect, injured and unstable. But the system had begun a countdown. Beneath the identity message, numbers showed less than six hours.

Sophie stared at the screen.

“What happens when it reaches zero?”

Daniel answered.

“The archive transmits itself.”

“To whom?”

“Everyone on the dead-man list.”

“What does that mean?” Rachel asked.

“It means every criminal named inside receives enough evidence to know who betrayed them.”

The archive was not designed for justice.

It was designed for mutually assured destruction.

If it transmitted, witnesses would die before investigators understood the files.

Julian arrived in restraints shortly before dawn.

His wounded shoulder was bandaged. He laughed when he saw the underground house.

“My bedroom is still here.”

Adrian stood before him.

“Open the vault.”

“Why?”

“To stop the transmission.”

“Let it transmit.”

“Children will die.”

“Children already died.”

“Emma and Sophie are alive.”

Julian looked at them.

For the first time, hatred gave way to uncertainty.

Sophie approached him.

“You said you would get the others out.”

“There are no others.”

“You lied.”

Julian looked away.

Sophie placed one of the prediction cards in his hand.

It read:

FIRST SON OPENS THE DOOR.

Below it, in different handwriting:

SECOND DAUGHTER DECIDES WHO WALKS THROUGH.

Julian stared at the words.

“Claire wrote this.”

“Madison?” Adrian asked.

“No.” Julian’s voice was suddenly quiet. “Her mother.”

A hidden speaker turned on.

Madison’s voice filled the training house.

“My name is Claire Westwood,” she said. “And if you are hearing this, the family has finally gathered where it began.”

May you like

The vault locks started to open.

Julian had not touched them.
