Chapter 8 - What Was Inside

At the police station, Rachel and Emily sat together beneath a gray blanket while detectives documented everything.
The two men were not ordinary contractors. Harrow Estate Recovery specialized in locating disputed property for private clients. The company often operated near the edge of the law. That night, they had crossed it.
Mark had hired them after finding Thomas Hale’s letter in Rachel’s cloud account.
The metal case was opened under police supervision using the code 6141958.
614 was the address of the green house.
1958 was the year Thomas bought it.
Inside was no pile of cash.
There were original property records, bank ledgers, signed statements, and a small encrypted drive.
The documents showed that, decades earlier, Thomas had discovered a network of fraudulent loans involving several local developers and a private bank. He had preserved evidence because one of the men involved had threatened his family.
Most of the crimes were too old to prosecute, but the records proved ownership of land that had been quietly transferred through false signatures. That land was now worth millions.
One of the companies trying to claim it had recently hired Mark as a consultant.
He had not stumbled onto the case by accident.
He had been promised a percentage if he recovered and destroyed the documents.
Rachel felt sick when the detective explained it.
Mark had traded his family’s safety for a chance at wealth.
Emily leaned against her.
“Was Dad always bad?” she asked later.
Rachel chose her words carefully.
“People are made by the choices they keep making. Tonight, he made choices that hurt us.”
“Did we do something wrong?”
“No.”

Rachel kissed the top of her head.
“We told the truth. That is why we are safe.”
