Chapter 5 - The Man Rachel Married

While she waited, Rachel remembered the first time Mark had met her grandfather.
They had been married for only six months. Mark was charming then, always ready with a joke, always eager to help. Her grandfather, Thomas Hale, had watched him quietly across the dinner table.
Later, Thomas asked Rachel one question.
“Does he love you, or does he love being chosen by you?”
Rachel had laughed.
At the time, she thought it was the suspicion of an old man who trusted numbers more than people.
Years passed. Mark became a real estate consultant. He made money, lost money, then made less. He began borrowing from their joint account without warning. Every apology sounded sincere. Every promise lasted just long enough.
Rachel stayed because Mark was gentle with Emily.
Or she believed he was.
Now her daughter was sleeping on a kitchen floor so strangers could tear apart her room.
Rachel opened the banking app.
Three large transfers had left their savings account that month. Each went to a company called H.E.R. Solutions.
Harrow Estate Recovery.
The total was nearly forty thousand dollars.
Mark had not only discovered the hidden case. He had paid men to find it.
A shadow crossed the hallway.
Rachel slid her phone into her pocket.
One of the strangers entered the kitchen.
He was broad-shouldered, with gray stubble and dust on his jacket. He saw Rachel immediately.
For half a second, neither moved.
Then his eyes dropped to Emily.
“Mark,” he called.
Rachel stepped between him and her daughter.
Mark appeared behind him.
His face changed when he saw her.
Not surprise.
Resentment.

As if Rachel’s early arrival were an inconvenience.
“You weren’t supposed to be home tonight,” he said.
