THE LIGHT BEHIND THE DOOR / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - A Call Without Words

Rachel could not risk speaking aloud, so she opened a message to 911.

She typed her address, explained that two unknown men were inside her daughter’s bedroom, and attached the doorbell images.

The dispatcher replied within seconds.

Are you and your child safe right now?

Rachel wrote: In kitchen. Husband involved. Men may be removing hidden property. No visible weapons.

Stay quiet. Officers are being sent. Do not confront them.

Rachel looked through the laundry room door.

Emily had curled beneath the blanket again, eyes closed exactly as instructed.

The bedroom door opened.

Mark stepped into the hallway.

Rachel froze behind the wall.

He walked toward the kitchen, stopped beside Emily, and stared down at her. His face showed no tenderness. Only calculation.

One of the men called softly, “Mark.”

He turned back.

“We found the compartment,” the man said. “But the case is locked.”

Mark lowered his voice. “Her grandfather used dates. Try Rachel’s birthday.”

Rachel felt the air leave her lungs.

Mark returned to the bedroom.

She stepped silently into the kitchen and crouched beside Emily.

“The police are coming,” she breathed.

Emily’s eyelids fluttered.

“Mom, I know the code.”

Rachel stared at her.

“What code?”

“The case. Dad kept asking me questions about Great-Grandpa. His birthday, Grandma’s birthday, the year he retired. I heard the men trying numbers.”

“Do not tell them.”

“I didn’t.”

Rachel squeezed her hand.

A sudden electronic beep sounded from the bedroom.

Then another.

The lock was rejecting their guesses.

One man cursed.

Mark said, “We don’t have time. Take the whole case.”

The sound of metal dragged across the floor.

Rachel checked her phone.

Police are two minutes away.

Two minutes felt like an hour.
