THE LIGHT BEHIND THE DOOR / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - Home Early

Rachel Bennett had spent seven nights in Chicago attending meetings that began before sunrise and ended after dinner. By Friday afternoon, she wanted only three things: her own bed, a hot shower, and Emily’s arms around her neck.

Her flight home was scheduled for Saturday morning, but the final presentation was canceled. Rachel changed her ticket without telling anyone.

She imagined surprising Mark and Emily with breakfast. She even bought Emily a tiny silver charm shaped like a book, because her daughter had recently decided she wanted to become a writer.

The house looked wrong the moment the taxi stopped.

The porch light was off.

Mark always left it on when Rachel traveled.

A white van stood two houses down with its headlights dark. Rachel barely noticed it. She paid the driver, pulled her suitcase up the walk, and quietly unlocked the front door.

Near midnight, the house should have been silent.

Instead, low male voices drifted from the hallway.

Rachel paused beside the entry table.

Her first thought was that Mark had invited friends over. Her second was that he would never do that while Emily was asleep.

Then she heard furniture scraping across wood.

She moved toward the kitchen and saw a small shape on the floor.

Emily lay curled beside the runner rug, covered with a thin cream blanket. Her head rested on the olive-colored pillow from the living room couch.

Rachel’s suitcase rolled into the wall.

Emily did not move.

“Emily?” Rachel whispered.

She dropped to her knees and pressed two fingers near her daughter’s wrist. The pulse was steady. Her breathing was calm.

Relief came first.

Then anger.

Why was her twelve-year-old daughter sleeping on the kitchen floor while strange men moved furniture inside her bedroom?
