Chapter 8 - The Nine-Year-Old Who Owned Something)

Michael stared at the document for nearly ten minutes.
“This doesn’t make sense.”
Claire paced beside his desk.
“What ownership interest?”
“It says EB Heritage Holdings.”
“Never heard of it.”
“Neither have I.”
“Who created it?”
Michael turned the page.
His expression changed.
“Thomas.”
Claire stopped.
Her father had created a holding company in Emma’s initials six years earlier.
Emma would have been three.
Its registered manager was Harrison, Cole and Mercer.
Claire called Eleanor Mercer immediately.
Eleanor refused to discuss it.
“The conditions remain unfulfilled.”
“Someone borrowed money against it.”
Silence.
“Eleanor?”
“That should not be possible.”
“It happened.”
“Send me the documents.”
Twenty minutes later Eleanor called back.
Her voice had changed.
“Claire, do not contact Lauren or Derek.”
“Why?”
“Because this loan document is fraudulent.”
“How do you know?”
“The ownership interest listed as collateral cannot legally be pledged.”
“Why?”
“Because Emma does not control it.”
“Who does?”
“The trust.”
“What trust?”
“I cannot answer.”
Claire nearly shouted.
“A nine-year-old has six hundred thousand dollars of fraudulent debt in her name.”
“I understand.”
“No, you apparently don’t.”
“I understand better than you realize.”
Eleanor paused.
“File for the final custody hearing.”
“That was already happening.”
“Move it forward.”
“Why?”
“Because once the court determines whether abandonment occurred, I can open 1224-B.”
Michael filed the motion.
Lauren responded aggressively.
She denied abandonment.
She claimed Emma had been left temporarily because a family friend was supposed to collect her.
There was no family friend.
Then Derek produced a witness.
A man named Caleb Morris claimed Lauren had called him.
Michael investigated him.
Caleb owed Derek forty thousand dollars.
The testimony collapsed before the hearing began.
Margaret begged Claire to settle.
“Let Lauren retain parental rights.”
“No.”
“Claire, please.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked exhausted.
“Because you don’t understand what happens if she loses them.”
Claire froze.
“You know about Dad’s trust.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Not everything.”
“How much do you know?”
“Enough.”
“Then tell me.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I promised Thomas.”
“Dad is dead.”
“And I still promised him.”
Claire’s voice hardened.
“You also promised Lauren silence.”
Margaret recoiled.
“That was different.”
“No. It was the same thing you always do. Protect the family image and let somebody else pay the price.”
Margaret began crying.
“Thomas knew Lauren was taking money.”
Claire waited.
“He knew Derek was using Emma’s identity.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“And you?”
“I learned near the end.”
“You did nothing.”
“I begged them to stop.”
“You did nothing.”
Margaret whispered, “Your father did.”
“What?”
“He changed everything.”
Claire stared at her.
“What did he change?”
Margaret wiped her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“I swear.”
“Then what are you afraid of?”
May you like
Margaret looked toward Emma playing in Claire’s garden.
“Your father told me that if Lauren ever proved him right, the Bennett family as we knew it would end.”
