Chapter 7 - The Brother Who Chose Wrong)

Ryan arrived at Claire’s house the following morning.
She did not invite him inside.
“You broke into Dad’s office.”
Ryan stared at her.
“I had a key.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“I wanted to know what you were collecting.”
“You took files.”
“I took family property.”
Claire held up her phone.
“I have you on video.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“Are you threatening me?”
“No. I’m telling you to return them.”
“You’re becoming obsessed.”
“With protecting Emma?”
“With destroying Lauren.”
Claire stared at him.
“You still think this is about Lauren.”
“It is.”
Emma appeared behind the living room window.
Ryan saw her.
His expression softened.
Claire noticed.
“You love her?”
“Of course.”
“Then why does protecting Lauren matter more?”
Ryan looked away.
“Because families survive mistakes.”
“Children survive adults. There’s a difference.”
He left without returning the files.
Two days later, Ryan called.
His voice sounded different.
“Can we meet?”
They met in a diner outside Hartford.
Ryan brought a cardboard box.
The stolen files.
“I read them.”
Claire sat opposite him.
“And?”
“I was wrong.”
He looked sick.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
Ryan removed a document.
Thomas had discovered Derek falsifying financial statements.
Lauren knew.
Thomas threatened to expose him.
Lauren begged her father not to.
Then came a handwritten note from Thomas.
L says D promises repayment. I do not believe him. M wants silence. R knows nothing. Keep Claire away until I understand whether Emma is being used.
Claire reread the last sentence.
“Used how?”
Ryan removed another page.
A life insurance policy.
Thomas had insured himself years earlier.
Beneficiary originally Margaret.
It had later been changed.
To a trust.
The trust name was redacted.
Ryan whispered, “Dad knew something was happening.”
Claire looked at him.
“You told Lauren about the hidden office.”
Ryan nodded.
“After Christmas.”
“Did she send you there?”
“Yes.”
“To destroy evidence?”
“She said Dad kept private letters that would humiliate Mom.”
Claire leaned back.
“And you believed her.”
“I wanted to.”
That answer hurt more because it was truthful.
Ryan pushed the box toward Claire.
“I’m done protecting her.”
“Good.”
“But there’s something else.”
He removed a small voice recorder.
“I found it inside Derek’s file.”
Claire stared.
“Did you listen?”
Ryan nodded.
“What’s on it?”
“Dad and Derek.”
Claire pressed play.
Thomas’s voice came first.
“You will return every dollar.”
Derek answered.
“You gave it willingly.”
“I invested based on fraudulent statements.”
“Prove it.”
“I can.”
Then Lauren.
“Dad, please.”
Thomas sounded furious.
“You brought my granddaughter into this.”
Claire stopped the recording.
She looked at Ryan.
“What did he mean?”
Ryan shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Claire pressed play again.
Thomas continued.
“If you ever use Emma’s name for another transaction, I will bury both of you.”
Claire’s blood turned cold.
Emma’s name.
Another transaction.
Michael subpoenaed financial records the next morning.
What arrived three weeks later stunned everyone.
Someone had opened accounts using Emma Bennett’s Social Security number.
The first account had been opened when Emma was five.
The authorized adult?
Lauren Bennett.
The second?
Derek Bennett.
The combined debt attached to Emma’s identity exceeded six hundred thousand dollars.

An ownership interest registered to Emma Bennett.
