Chapter 12 - The Four Envelopes)

That was how the courtroom reached the moment nobody in the Bennett family would ever forget.

Michael left briefly to verify the documents.

When he returned, he carried the thick folder.

Four envelopes went onto the table.

Ryan opened his.

Margaret opened hers.

Lauren opened hers.

Claire waited.

Ryan’s letter contained only two pages.

His face collapsed as he read.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Lauren shouted.

“What the hell does Emma have to do with this?!”

Derek grabbed the second page.

“Claire, you knew?”

“She didn’t,” Michael said.

“But your father did.”

The judge ordered everyone seated.

Michael requested permission to explain.

Granted.

He opened the second folder.

“Thomas Bennett executed a conditional family trust approximately eighteen months before his death.”

Lauren interrupted.

“This is bullshit.”

The judge glared at her.

Michael continued.

“The trust contains separate provisions for Margaret Bennett, Claire Bennett, Lauren Bennett and Ryan Bennett.”

Ryan stared at his letter.

“My inheritance?”

“Your conditional interest.”

“What condition?”

Michael looked toward Emma.

“Thomas Bennett believed assets belonging to Emma were being exploited.”

Lauren stood.

“That’s a lie!”

Michael produced bank records.

“You opened financial accounts using Emma’s identity.”

“I’m her mother!”

“That does not authorize fraud.”

Derek whispered, “Lauren, shut up.”

She rounded on him.

“You signed them too!”

The courtroom exploded in whispers.

Derek’s expression turned murderous.

Michael continued.

“Thomas discovered the activity. He also discovered unauthorized transfers from his holdings into Bennett Horizon Development.”

Lauren shook her head.

“He gave us that money.”

“Then why did he demand its return?”

Michael placed the voice recorder on the table.

Lauren froze.

Ryan whispered, “Oh, shit.”

Michael played Thomas’s voice.

You will return every dollar.

Derek’s recorded response followed.

You gave it willingly.

Then Thomas:

I invested based on fraudulent statements.

The recording continued until the sentence that made Lauren stop breathing.

If you ever use Emma’s name for another transaction, I will bury both of you.

Michael stopped it.

The judge looked toward Lauren and Derek.

Neither spoke.

Michael lifted the certified documents.

“Thomas then restructured his holdings.”

Claire finally opened her envelope.

The first paragraph addressed her directly.

Claire,

You have spent your life believing strength means carrying everything alone.

If this letter has reached you, you have finally discovered that sometimes strength means choosing who you carry.

Claire’s eyes filled.

She looked toward Emma.

The next section was legal language.

Her own inheritance had changed.

She had not been disinherited.

Neither had Ryan.

But Lauren’s interest had become conditional.

If Lauren abandoned or financially exploited Emma, her interest would terminate.

Lauren whispered, “No.”

Michael looked at her.

“Your father gave you an opportunity to remain a beneficiary.”

“I’m his daughter.”

“He apparently believed being his daughter came with obligations.”

“How much?”

Michael did not answer.

Lauren screamed.

“How much did he take from me?”

Michael looked toward the judge.

“Her interest has been terminated.”

Margaret began sobbing.

Ryan whispered, “Where does it go?”

Michael closed the folder.

“That question is answered by the final instrument.”

Lauren stared at Emma.

“You.”

Claire immediately stood.

“Don’t look at her.”

“You little thief.”

The judge slammed the gavel.

“Mrs. Bennett!”

Emma shrank behind Claire.

Lauren pointed at her own daughter.

“You took everything!”

Claire moved between them.

“She was nine years old.”

“She ruined my life!”

“No.”

Claire’s voice was calm.

“You finally ran out of people willing to let you ruin hers.”

Two deputies approached Lauren.

The judge ordered her removed.

But before they reached her, Michael said something that stopped everyone.

“Lauren, your terminated inheritance is not the largest problem you have.”

She turned.

Michael held up the unopened final document.

“Thomas knew somebody might attempt to access Emma’s assets after his death.”

Derek stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he created a record of every protected account.”

Derek slowly sat down.

Michael continued.

“And somebody accessed three of them.”

Lauren looked at Derek.

May you like

Derek looked at Lauren.

For the first time, Claire realized they were afraid of each other.
